I heard the FAQ was nice but anyway here you go
Grapple : See "grappling hook"
Grappling Hook : A device that stems from the Quake1 and Quake2 CTF days. The grappling hook (or grapple for short) is fired at a wall where it'll latch itself onto and pull the player towards that point allowing the player to reach previously unreachable areas or move great distances at high speed. There are two types of grappling hooks: offhand and onhand. Onhand grapples are used like they are a weapon in your inventory. Offhand grapples can be shot at any time even when holding a different weapon in your hands.
Quake3 does not feature a grappling hook itself so a mod is required to add a grapple to the game. One such mod is OSP. Enter "\hook_enable 1" in the console of the server to enable the grappling hook. Bind a key to +button5 (\bind a +button5) to use the grapple as a player. OSP's grapple is offhand.

To use the grapple hook, first it must be enabled on the server and you must bind a key or button to use it. In baseq3 the command would be as follows: "/bind x weapon 10". In OSP it would be "/bind x +button5". A good idea is to put this in your config: /bind x "weapon 10; +button5" that way, either way you'll have it set. Just replace the "x" with any key or button of your choice.
