What Linux distribution should I use?

Post by eepberries »

I want to install Linux onto an old pentium 166mhz computer I have. I'm want to use it as a shitty web server. Can anyone reccomend a good, free Linux distribution to use?

head over to distrowatch.com and try some live cd's out. keep in mind that speeds depend on RAM and drive speed.

I use Gentoo but previously used Slackware.

You don't want to use Gentoo on a P166 or you'll be busy compiling for a month. Like Juggernaut said, go with DSL or Debian (or one of its derivates). How much memory does the box have?

Give http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ a try. I only hope your website doesn't generate too much traffic or the kernel will be forced to continously swap pages in and out of memory. Which is bad for performance, obviously.
