Processor fan

It seems my fan is dying on me at times. It has nothing to do with the load on the processor so it could be two things. Dirt or old age.

In case of dirt i would like to know the best ways to clean it.
If it died of old age i'd like some advice on good brands that aren't too expensive. The proc isn't overclocked so i don't need a hypercharged cooler.

Take it off and blow the dust off with some compressed air.

No idea on the prices.

Most CPU fans are fairly inexpensive. Somewhere in the $20-60 range ought to do a fine job.

I like Zalman coolers. Most are solid copper suckers that work quite well. Most models are designed to be very quiet.

Never tried a Thermaltake, but they are more elaborate. Heard mixed reviews about how quiet they are depending on the model.

Check:
* compatibility with CPU (socket etc)
* size - some are quite large and may interfer with internal components like mobo resistors, drives, etc.
* noise - loud fans will drive you crazy.

I'll first try to blow the dirt out. If that doesn't work i'll take a good look at those zallman's. The one i have now is loud as hell..

And i think a new fan for a socket 462 might be a bit hard to find :icon32:

Get one with a heatpipe. I'd recommend the Freezer by Arctic Cooling, but they don't make it for that socket.

Find a Thermalright that works (XP-90 is a good choice). Thermalright, not Thermaltake.

Survivor, you're Dutch, right? Try the FunPrice. You can usually pick up older CPU coolers from their bargain bins for "een zacht prijsje", around 15 to 20 euro.

Thanks for the suggestion but I live way down south near Maastricht. I found a Zalman CNPS7000 AlCu near me for only 32 euro though so I think I'll be getting that.

Whenever a fan stops working you have either:

- an EXTREMELY dusty pc case (layer of 2 inches of dust on the bottom);

- electrical problem (loose wire);

- worn out old fan.

Btw if you're cleaning your case with a vacuum cleaner (which isn't dangerous as long as you stay away from sensitive parts), never suck the dust of fans with it. It will make them spin much faster than they're designed to and will either shorten their lifespan or they'll burn out next time you power on your pc.

Oh for real. Every ASUS motherboard is compatible with it EXCEPT the one i have.
