1. Yes
2. Most clans have an IRC channel, where you can usually find a website in the topic of their clan channel. The most popular servers are irc.enterthegame.com (North America) and irc.quakenet.org (Europe).
3. Some clans are dedicated to one gametype such as TDM or CTF while others play several while others participate in a variety of different games.

of course there aren't nearly as many clans active now as there were... 2-3 years ago? if you find a busy pub server you'll eventually notice regular players with clan tags. hang out and play a bunch, get to know people and prove your coolness, get on irc, etc. that's the usual progression.

Once you encounter some clan people you like, you can ask if they have a channel.

After starting up mIRC, you will be taken to the 'About mIRC' popup window with a picture of the programmer on it. Just close the popup window by clicking the X in the top right corner. You don't need to register this software in order to use it. Whenever this screen pops up in the future when you start mIRC just close it.

Afterwards, another window will open with 'Connect' settings. First off, you have to choose an IRC server from the list (either EntertheGame or QuakeNet). If non of the servers listed lets you connect you can manually type in the status window later on. Enter in all the necessary information like your 'Full Name', 'Email Address', 'Nickname', and 'Alternative'. If both your selected Nickname and Alternative are already in use you will need to select a different Nickname.

Once you close up the 'mIRC Options' window, you will be brought to the main mIRC console. To connect to the IRC server, click on the lightning bolt icon in the upper left-hand corner of the toolbar. It should say something like '*** Connecting to [server name] (6667)', then a bunch of junk and words should scroll by quickly, and the 'mIRC Channel Window' should open. If it just hangs and doesn't connect, you will have to connect manually to the IRC server. It might also start going down the server list trying to find a connection.

To connect manually click the bottom bar of the mIRC console, type '/server [server name]', then hit Enter. Don't worry if you get message such as "You are banned form this server" or "No more connections allowed", this probably has to do with the ISP you are using. For instance if you wanted to connect to EntertheGame network, you would type "/server irc.enterthegame.com" in the status window. Afterwards , type "/list" to see a list of available channels you can join (right-clicking on the active list window allows you to sort the channels according to number of people in the channel, alphabetically, etc.). You can join a channel by typing in "/join #channelname". You will notice three main things when you join a channel:
  • 'The Talk Bar' This is where you type when you want to talk. After you are done writing your line, press Enter to post the line into the Active Window where everyone can see what you wrote.

'User List' Shows all the people who are currently in the channel at that moment. On the top of the list you will notice people with an @ in front of their name. These people are Channel Operators (commonly called 'ops'). They have the power change the channel topic (the purple bar in the picture), kick out annoying people, ban certain people from ever coming back into the channel, and other administrative functions. Channel Operators are usually trusted people who often are either clan member and/or trusted acquaintances of the channel owners/operators..

'Private Message' Some times on the IRC, you will want to talk with someone one-on-one privately. By double-clicking the mouse on someone's name on the User List, you can open up a Private Message window with them.
You don't necessarily need to join a clan to become a good player (obviously a clan or team is necessary if you wish to compete in team-based gamemodes) barring the desire for other positive aspects of clans, such as social interaction and friendship. People often join clans by getting to know others by simply playing with them regularly on public servers thereby establishing relationships with them which can lead to clan invitations.

Be sure to check out PlanetQuake's "Quake III Arena Game Guide" which contains an explanation of basic Quake fundamentals and strategies.

Try to think tactically. Attempt to build a deeper appreciation for the tactical nuances of Quake, or any FPS for that matter. Here are a few tips:
  • - Keep your cool
    - Watch and learn from your opponent
    - Avoid predictability
    - Learn when to run away
    - Maintain situational awareness
    - Anticipate your opponent's moves
    - Know when take/give up items
    - Take a smart approach to doors and natural choke points
    - Don't silhouette yourself in doors and windows
    - Camp tactically
    - Listen to the audio cues
    - Use prep/prediction fire when available
    - Strafe around corners
    - Backtrack occasionally
    - Avoid natural kill zones
    - Learn the maps (item locations, strategic points, etc. You're in good shape if you know the locations of every item on the map, you can visualize the map in your head as well as being able to run it backwards)
*** With practice and these tips in mind, your multiplaying skills will increase over time until you're seeing your name in lights at the top of the scoreboard.

Don't stop moving unless you have a good reason. If you stop too long, you're dead, plain and simple. Most newbies stop moving because they can't shoot on the run. Moving and shooting accurately are independent. Tweak your controls until you do both comfortably. You need to learn how to combine them together effectively. My advice, learn. Practice with a friend to develop this skill in a low stress environment.

You should get in the habit of moving constantly. Essentially if you can see your opponent he can see you also, so it's a good idea not to stand in one spot for an extended period of time. Obviously in certain situations if your opponent has his back to you (and you're playing 1v1) you DON't have to move at all that is if you are having trouble aiming while moving.

Choose the right weapon for the job. Every game tries to balance the weapons so that each one has advantages and disadvantages. There is no one perfect weapon for all occasions. Learn what each weapon can do, under what circumstances they are most useful, and what their downsides are.

Learn how to strafe jump. Using this technique allows you to increase ones speed past the intended theoretical physics by making use of a flaw inherent in a rounding error in the movement code. Simply put, it is a method of increasing a player's jumping ability and speed. What it basically is, is running, jumping, and pressing strafe all at the same time. Please check the FAQ and this link for more in-depth information on the art of strafe jumping.

You may find watching pro players demos useful, some notable names are cooller, ZeRo4, and czm. They are entertaining to watch and you may pick up on a few things that you can incorporate into your own game. You can find demos on http://www.cached.net , http://www.esreality.com , http://www.cyberfight.org , and http://www.challenge-tv.com. Use Seismovision demo player to play these demos.

Practice. Practice. Practice. All these points won't come automatically to you nor will you be able incorporate all of them into your game at this point, however you will learn and progress through experience. Play against good competition and skilled opponents (most of whom play OSP and/or CPMA mod). At your skill level, simply the more you practice and the more you play against good opponents, the better you will get.

Good Luck and Happy Fragging! :)

You must accept the truth from whatever source it comes.

The essence of success is that it is never necessary to think of a new idea oneself. It is far better to wait until somebody else does it, and then to copy him in every detail, except his mistakes.

Map Knowledge - One of the most important part of Quake is knowing the map. Good aim comes from knowing the map extremely well. So does the ability to take control and stay in control.

Confidence - I've seen a lot of good players lose just because they think they are going to lose. People who think they are going to lose make bad decisions, and they miss easy shots. It's the self fulfilling prophecy. If you think you are going to lose, you will probably lose. If you think you will win, then you probably will win.

DM skills - The least of these three assets, but still important, is the actual gaming skills of the competitor. This involves more than just aim, but just as important the ability to impair the other players' aim through the way you move. It also involves the forethought to engage battles where you have the advantage. Be unpredictable.

*** Remember, put your ego aside and lose more while training -- losing teaches you more than success.

Good Luck and Happy Fragging! :)

i just meant i hoped you didn't take time out of your life to type all that in this thread. 10 minutes you'd never get back that could have been speant more productively... like drooling on yourself or shitting or whatever.
