WARNING: Couldn't load map file: 'maps/test'
Hey all, when I try to bsp my map I get this error message.
Couldn't load map file---- dmap ----
--- LoadDMapFile ---
loading maps/test
WARNING: Couldn't load map file: 'maps/test'
I'm just doing a simple box with a info player spawn in it just to test out quake4 mapping but I can't even get it to bsp. There are no leaks cuz like I said I just made a simple box, deselected it, put a playerspawn in, snapped it to the ground (making sure it wasn't going out in to the void) deselected it and saved it, then tried to bsp it. and that's what I get.
I had installed quake4 into program files/id software etc but I heard that the spaces can sometimes cause problems so I uninstalled an reinstalled in g:\quake4 but that didn't help.
I've tried setting the path in the preferences and that makes exactly zero difference.
I've searched here and there doesn't seem to be an answer, I've also googled and came up with nothing.
Any help that could be offered would be deeply appreciated.
Thanks,
H²

Did you try to hit p for preferences and shut down your radiant to clean everything?
Also a tipp, just draw the box once again put in a player start compile and for help maybe add a skybox make hollow button.
This should help anyway the editors are the first editors for q4 and they are verry buggy.
I can make you a test map if you want.
Edit: I can see now what you mean, also having the problem taht I cannot get the bsp.
Anyway, aren't we suppost to talk about that in q4discussions?

This is the preference box I'm seeing:

Perhaps one of these settings is wrong.
I've tried all kinds of different settings in the path box and it always gives me the exact same error message.
I also tried unchecking the "use new map format" button cuz I thought that might have helped.
I've shut down and started up radiant several times.
I'm sorry I'm not farmilliar with "player start compile" or "skybox make hollow button" Unless by skybox make hollow button you mean make a brush and then make it hollow which is what I'm doing. and then putting the player start inside it.
Anyway, Thanks for your help.

I'll say, it looks like they just started from scratch instead of building on what they had before.the editors are the first editors for q4 and they are verry buggy.
I don't think so, I posted a different q4 map question in there and they moved it here (Sorry about that btw)Anyway, aren't we suppost to talk about that in q4discussions?

BSP the map from Q4edit and then test your map doing the following, if it's an MP map;

I notice your map path is g:/quake4/maps--usually the maps folder lives in q4base (along with all the other stuff, save basic .exes and .dlls and such).HisHighness wrote:Perhaps one of these settings is wrong.
I don't know for sure if that's the problem, but it *is* non-standard. Perhaps try saving to/compiling from g:/quake4/q4base/maps instead? Hope this helps.
I beat the internet; the end guy is hard.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOO! I finally figured it out!
I decided since the Doom3 map editor and the Quake 4 map editor were very simular that someone may have had the same problem I di with the Doom 3 editor. Since it's been out longer there was a good possibility there was a solution. I did a search and found the answer:
You need to create a directory called "maps" in your q4base directory and save them there. So it's like this for me:
G:/quake4/q4base/maps/test.map
This is with the map path setting blanked out. I'm going to go post this in the "post your Q4 bugs" thread so others can find the answer.

I forgot to mention, it happens no matter what I put under Q4 editor's "map path" preference, and no matter what name I use when I save my map, BSP insists in loading from maps/C:/Program

I finally found some info on this specific issue, if you wanna check these links:
http://modetwo.net/darkmod/index.php?s= ... topic=2325
http://lms.d3files.com/forum/viewtopic. ... dab6dbe85b
The fact that we'd need to install to a folder other than the default just to be able to map doesn't make any sense to me. I'll report back once I reinstall the game.

You shouldn't need to do this. I've got two mod directories set up for both Q4 and D3 and the both work fine based on my ../Program Files/.. install. There has to be something else at play here otherwise *everyone* would be having the same problem. For Quake 4 editing it's recommended that MP maps be saved to and compiled from maps/mp but aside from the the folders need to physically exist.

Don't forget to use quotes if your pathname has blanks in it:resumil wrote:I forgot to mention, it happens no matter what I put under Q4 editor's "map path" preference, and no matter what name I use when I save my map, BSP insists in loading from maps/C:/Program

"C:\Program Files\id Software\Quake 4\q4base\Maps"
The pathname will be truncated to
C:\Program
if you don't use quotes.
When using quotes everything should work fine without reinstalling.
I reinstalled the game to C:\Quake4 (no spaces) and now the warning reads "Couldn't load map file: 'maps/C:/Quake4/q4base/Maps/test01'"
Since then I've tried C:\Quake4\q4base\Maps under the editor's "map path" setting, and also leaving it blank, both with and without quotes, but even after restarting the editor, I still get the exact same message. I basically need to find a way to remove the 'maps/' at the beginning of the map path.

Q4 ed inserts 'maps/' at beginning of map path
I followed the basic room tut for Q4, my map has the info_player_start and everything...
What's really strange is that I've installed Quake 4 on 3 different PCs, and I still have the same issue, so I guess I'm missing some really basic point.
Yet I've looked everywhere from Q4 fan sites to the Q4SDK docs, but nobody seems to have an answer. Even the links I posted above don't lead to a specific solution.
Never had this kind of problem with Q3/qeradiant either, but I just want to give Q4 a try. I'm starting to feel frustrated.
