Ive got a new router/modem and im lost again. This is all way beyond me and I dont see any logic in any of it.

At the back of the router theres no usb socket, how do I plug it into my pc?

Also in my netowrk connections I have "1394 Connection". Is this my lan thingy thats on my motherboard?

nope. 1394 connection is your firewire port. your rj45 port looks like a wide phone jack.

your modem should have one of these also. connect the two with Cat5/6 cable. your motherboard has firewire, so it should have an rj45/lan port also. if it doesn't head to the store and get a network interface card. you just plop it into an available pci slot (might have to load drivers depending on brand) and you're off and running.

I have that on my cd. It tells me to plug the phone line from phone line to router, connect ethernet cable from pc to a ethernet port at the back of the router, connect the power up and finally turn on the pc. Then its tells me to go to step 2 which says to type in 1.92.168.1.1 into my web browser, which obviously does nothing becuase I have no connection to the internet :/

so you have an ethernet port and a cat 5 cable, right?

also, the 192.168.1.1 address doesn't need an internet connection. that is the address to configure your router.

Ip addresses can be assigned on local networks as well as the internet.

The Ip it states to use is 192.168.1.1 (check the dots), and it's the IP address of your router.

With that IP address, it should be doing something. If not let us know.

he's not stated that he's even connected both devices with a Cat5/6 cable yet.

I dont think the ethernet connection on my PC is working. I have nothing for it under my network connections. I checked my bios and I enabled it in there (it was disabled) and I installed drivers for it from the asus cd, but I still see nothing under my netowkr connections. I think its not working and this is whats wrong:(

I went through the set up process on the cd and entered all my ISP settings etc.. When I got to the end and clicked "save" to save the settings I got this message: "Unable to connect tto the router. Check the cable connection from the computer to the router. Contact linksys technical support for further assistance."

Something has to be wrong with the ethernet socket on my pc?

with the cat5/6 plugged into both the router and the pc, go to Start>Run, type "cmd". when the prompt appears, type "ipconfig" without the quotes and let us know what it says.

it doesn't say anything about an Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection?

check device manager and see if windows lists network adapters. if not, you might need to run through the new connection wizard which is in the control panel>network and internet connections

when was the last time you rebooted this pc? some reason, even after you've enabled in the bios (i don't know why it would be disabled in the first place), and loaded the drivers, i don't see why it's not showing up in device manager. are you SURE you loaded the drivers for the ethernet connector/controller?

It was disbaled in the bios because I disbaled it ages ago. I wish I hadnt touched it now.

I installed the drivers from the cd. "Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet Controller".

Maybe I should get this and try it: http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/Sh ... uctID=1087
