quake 3 performance issues?

Post by themexicanbob »

ok i havent palyed q3 for years

i recently found my old cd of it and feeling kinda nostalgic i loaded it up

and omg it runs like a heap of *$!&!?* i mean worse than it did many years ago on my old voodoo 2 card and (possibly) k62 processor

i have an AMD 64 with a gig of DDR ram and a 256 meg geforce6000 (its a 6000 somthign i cant remember the exact model of the top of my head) running windows xp and it actually runs it worse than my old pc (ok this may not strictly be true as it was a mighty long time ago but its certainly runnign shockingly poor and often unplayable)

real crazy thing is both doom 3 and quake 4 (and half life 2, far cry and any other fps you could care to name) run absolutely incredibly they look stunning and the graphics fly

so whats going on? does quake 3 have an issue with amd64's? windows xp? geforce6000? i really dont get it ever other program i have run on my pc has run flawlessly what with quake3?

the performance also seems to get even worse when palying over either the net (my ping is usually>100) or over a lan

any help would be gratefully appreciated :icon31:

its worth while getting the pbweb exec, as pb can and will drag any system down while it updates in a server

PBweb is dead. They replaced it with a setup program that updates all the games using pb at once.

quick follow up

just to say i got it sorted

i messed round trying to update punkbuster but nothing seemed to help

in the end (out of sheer desperation) i uninstalled and re-installed quake 3 updated it to the latest point release and its running perfect

dont know how or why but im not complaining :)
