So I finally tried the demo
I had forgotten just how much fun quake was. Digital crack. But before I dump $50 or ask for it for Christmas, how's the community shaping up? I'd prefer to play a game with a bit of longevity. Are there full servers? Quality maps? Mods?
Mods are definitely being worked on very hard. So far it's only some brightskins and small HUD and gameplay modifications but soon the first versions that make use of the SDK will come out.
There's a fair collection of custom maps available and enough mappers (well known ones too) are preparing or already building to expect some quality work soon.
The Q4 stock MP maps aren't a reason for enthousiasm though. They don't compare to the ones in Q3, which weren't even that great with the exception of a few.
It's certainly possible to play find some games but it's not like you can take your pick from dozens of full servers. The numbers will probably grow as more people have a fast enough setup to play Q4 reasonably smoothly.
The comparison of Q4 with crack might be pretty accurate because of all the bad side effects. All the bugs and shortcomings mainly piss off people that are spoiled with close to perfect Q3 mods, but there are many bugs that are quite inexcusable nonetheless. Connecting to servers isn't exactly easy because of the different custom maps, broken autodownload, your client getting stuck in a reconnecting loop that you can't interrupt without terminating Q4 entirely.
So to sum it up: Q4 is full of potential and worth buying (for the SP too, it's great imo), but expect to be disappointed or at least quite annoyed when you try the MP in it's current state.
Porting extensive Q3 configs quite a lot of work btw. A lot of quotes and double quotes (parentheses) and prefixes (ua_) are necessary.
