Wow. I just loaded 0.7 on our server. These changes they made are amazing! The game feels MUCH more competitive for me now.

BTW, I've heard demos are starting to trickle in from the CPL events. Anyone know where I can find them?

WTF are you talking about? Q4 was meant to be Q3 in a new engine. Open up the .def files, all the multiplayer weapons that have equivilents in Q3 have "//q3 setting" or something like that beside it. It was supposed to move the same, feel the same, ect ect.Grudge wrote:ffs, they've turned Q4 into Q3
why even bother? why not just play Q3 instead? someone can sure just make a Kane model for Q3, it would look just the same.
A few additions were made in crouch sliding, and a slightly different weapon set but it wanted to be Q3++. Now in a competitive setting there are current standards which Q4 didnt meet. Thats what Q4Max adds, so what are you talking about? Because not everyone wants to run around in the dark squinting looking for models that blend into the background we should all be playing Q3? I would bet money that if the leagues, ladders, competitions and such all stayed with Q3 we would all be playing Q3 still and Q4 sales would have been shattered.
The point he's making, I think, is that all a new engine offers is graphical improvements. Hence why not remain with Q3 for competitive play? Is it just for the sake of the money being offered in tournaments?jester! wrote:WTF are you talking about? Q4 was meant to be Q3 in a new engine. After all, Q3's got more refined movement, better maps, greater graphical customisability, lower system requirements, forcemodel, matured mods with: brightskins, promode, voting options, hud tweaks, advanced demo recording......
Why spend time getting a new game back up to a barely equal stance with one that's already out there? The 'competitive' scene has no compelling reason for needing newer graphical engines to run on, indeed as we're seeing here, it would appear there's more reason to stick to the basic graphics of older games.

Yeah money is a big part of it and the sponsors arent going to push a game released 5 years ago obviously.
A new game will bring back the more casual gamers, while also bringing the big hardware sponsorship for the CPL and such. If I could, with an Iron fist, force everyone in the world to play Q3 every day and remove MMORPGs from the world and smite CS I would, but that wont happen so competitors will follow the money, and more casual gamers follow the new games.
The problem with Q4 is that its oh so great light engine made casual gamers with a casual gamer system have to play with unacceptable framerates. Q4Max takes that penalty away with this vertex light method something which if it had been in before may have helped sales, well not hardware but I dont really want to believe in that conspiracy theory...

Yeah but that just seems more like a cycle and less like.
"Hey rgoer, how about this, you make it so that only our top end cards will run your new game well, and we will make sure that swiss account of yours is full at the end of each month for a year."
"Nah, we can put vertex light in with like 40 lines of code, it will help out the players, and their good will will later boost our sales, plus it would be the right thing to do."
"Ok, do you know what the term six zeros alludes to?"
"Vertex light? Whats that?"
Thats what I am talking about. Something more conspiracy like. :icon26:

So making it possible to turn down the detail/effects more (like Q3) to make it possible for a wider public to play the game at decent frame rates, won't boost sales? Maybe they agreed to make these options available in a late patch, when everyone has already bought new hardware...prince1000 wrote:it's not a conspiracy theory. it's economics 101.

:icon14: Major new first person shooter games almost always require new hardware to play at decent framerates (Quake 3 was exactly the same way when it was released). The software and hardware industries have a mutually beneficial cycle going. If people have new hardware then they are going to want games that will do that hardware justice and if people have the latest game then they're going to want new hardware in order to see top frame rates.prince1000 wrote:it's not a conspiracy theory. it's economics 101.
