How Copy Protection affects good people

Post by Giraffe }{unter »

True story

Bob and Mary are nice upper class law obiding citizens. Despite their friend Joe's offer to give them whatever free CD they want from the internet they kindly turn down the offer and buy the CD at a retail store.

Joe and his wife were with Bob and Mary xmas morning and they both gave each other a copy of "Santana - All That I Am" It was cute to see the two of them give each other the same gift, but the happiness stopped there.

When Joe and his wife arrived at Bob and Mary's house for dinner a few days later something seemed odd, their normal cheery house looked dark and grim. The shudders were rapping in the cold lifeless wind, and dark clouds swirled above out heads.

Bob greeted us at the door with a odd evil look on his face, I cannot copy my ne Santana CD to my MP3 player, it's got some thing on it that messed up my CD drive...

As we left that night Mary gave Joe a list of CDs to Download, stating they will never buy a store CD again if this is the way they payback loayal customers.

Afterthought...

Mary has a point the people who warez these CDs are not going to buy a CD so why copy protect it to fuck the people who lay out their hard earned cash for it? Why don't they learn, any for of copy protection can and will be broken so why bother.

right, but it's BEEN happening for quite some time. there are quite a few cd's that a layman cannot transfer to their mp3 player(s).

and how many millions of times do we need to hear this:

yes, it's all true, but this is yet just another rant and brings nothing new to the table; hence "old".

odd and frustrating, trust me, i know. the more of this crap i come across when i'm legitimately buying a cd pushes me closer and closer to acquiring this stuff online. and no, i don't mean itunes or some other 128kbps b.s.

you said we - so you are either bob, mary, joe or his wife. BUT then you said Bob greeted "us" which means you are either Joe, or Joe's wife!...Sorted!!

if that's true then you didn't experience it in real life - whoever played "joe" in real life did. :P

I have no problems with buying a good cd, but if I buy a cd I want to be able to listen to it on the medium of my choice, but when they restrict that, of course im gonna go with what works for me.

Its all about quality to me, and the ITMS absolutely sucks for quality. 128kbps just doesnt have the throughput for good audio, regardless of the comression algorithm used these days. I wont go any lower than 192kbps AAC for my music, and I much prefer to have 320kbs if I can manage it. If they upped the quality to 320kbps or even to 192, I'd considder it, but at 128kbps its just not worth it to me.
