Cant connect to master server?

Post by Xenozx »

I installed game, patched to 1.32. When I try to connect online, it says it cant find the master server, and points me here. Any idea what would cause this?

Sorry about that, I was kinda in a hurry and didnt realize that. This is my first time playing quake 3 arena, I never would have thought they would take down the master server. I play UT 2004 alot (one of the reasons I wanted to check out Q3) and I use their ingame search for servers, which your right is much better then the Q3 one, and is still active to boot.

I had xfire, and cant figure out how to find servers that you havent already visited with it. So I bit the bullet and downloaded gamespy again. I had difficulities joining servers and such. I read about a program called

drwpr

thats sopose to let you choose the protocol when you go to join a server, I cant find a link to it though, anyone have a link to this program?

Also I got into a server and it put me in spectate mode and told me I couldnt join until it updated my punk buster.... I downloaded 1.32 patch which is the last one right and it came with punk buster? Is that not the newest one? If not where can I find it? (will be doing a google search shortly after this so I may answer my own question)

This can all be found in the stickies... All you need to find Q3 servers is The All-Seeing Eye (ASE). There is a simple tool to update PB in all the games on your system that use it, go to http://www.evenbalance.com

Please, more reading and less hurry. ;)

About choosing the protocol: you'll want to play on the latest version (1.32, protocol 68) mostly. There are some good servers that run 1.30 and 1.31 (protocol 66 and 67). I'm sure the sticky links to Q3 version changers (to choose the right protocol), but personally i find it easiest to setup ASE to use the right quake3.exe version.

Steps to achieve this:

1. Download the 1.30, 1.31 and 1.32 point releases.

2. Install 1.30, rename quake3.exe to quake3_66.exe, then install 1.31, rename the newly installed quake3.exe to quake3_67.exe and then install 1.32 and rename the new file to quake3_68.exe.

3. In ASE, go to Tools>Options>Games>Quake 3 Arena and put the path to quake3_68.exe in the Program Location box ("E:\Games\Quake III Arena\quake3_68.exe" for instance).

4. Rename two of your favorites folders to Q3 1.30 and Q3 .31, or something similar to know which version they have.

5. Rightclick on those favorites folders, click "Custom config..." and put the path to the right Q3 version in the Cmd Line box ("E:\Games\Quake III Arena\quake3_66.exe" for Q3 1.30 for example) for both folders.

6. Any time you want to join a 1.30 or 1.31 server, add them to the right favorites folder first, and then join them from that folder. Q3 will normally startup 1.32 unless you use the favorites with the custom config.

You can get more Q3 versions from some Q3 Version changer programs. They put all different quake3.exe versions in your Quake 3 folder, renamed to something like quake3.127 quake3.130 quake3.131 etc. It's a bit easier because you don't have to install all the different point releases (only 1.32).

And they haven't: master3.idsoftware.com is still up, most of the time. Mods, fix the FAQ.

master3.idsoftware.com no longer replies to ICMP echo requests (some scriptkiddies used that to DDoS it a while back) but it's still there:

Code: Select all

$ qstat -q3m master3.idsoftware.com | perl -e 'while (<>){ $i++ if /^Q3S/ } print "Master reports $i servers online.\n"'
Master reports 1517 servers online.

Seems I was slightly off, because the canonical name is master.quake3arena.com. It resolves to the same address as master3.idsoftware.com (and monster.idsoftware.com), though.

Code: Select all

$ host master.quake3arena.com && host master3.idsoftware.com
master.quake3arena.com has address 192.246.40.56
master3.idsoftware.com is an alias for monster.idsoftware.com.
