The question that won't go away..... Cheap Hosting?

Post by R00k »

Where's a good place to host files? I've always stuck with free ones before, but I always wind up losing the space, or it goes down, or they change their remote linking policies, or whatever, so I'm willing to pay for some decent hosting if I need to, as long as it's not expensive.

I basically just want about 50 megs of storage space (give or take) where there aren't any file-type restrictions, and I can drop whatever I want to up there. I know some hosts have restrictions on streaming file types (*.asx etc), and I don't have a problem with that since I don't care about streaming media anyway.
I'd just like to be able to access it online from anywhere, and not have any remote linking restrictions. It would be nice if I could drop an html index in it at some point, but that's optional, and I don't really care about database support or any of that. Just an internet hard drive I can get to, and remote link to as well.
Bandwidth shouldn't be a big deal -- if it has enough bandwidth for me to post images here and let everyone view them, then that will probably be enough bandwidth for my purposes, since any viewing aside from this forum will just be me using it personally.

I would be willing to pay around 5 bucks a month for it if neccessary -- is that reasonable for a decent host these days? I could maybe go as high as 10, but that seems excessive for what I'm looking for.

Thanks for any advice. :icon32:

They have a free 6 month plan, but in theory it ended yesterday. Looks like signing up still works though, at least here.

Yeh I think the 3 year deal dosen't give you good bandwidth... a friend was hosting car movies on his and they turned off his account a month later. =o

I mostly use it for pics and the odd file here and there.

Rook, I can give you a subdirectory and ftp access to my host for $5. Its on 1and1 but it would keep you from having to fill out a bunch of shit and deal with "Tha Man".

PS: I actually pay for my account so there is no worries about it ever being shut down.

That would be awesome man. Would I just need to setup a PayPal account or what?

My ICQ is 226928878

I would only really use it for pictures, and the odd file here and there so I can get to it from somewhere else.

Good evening my friends

Here is a free web host…
http://www.esmartstart.com/support.php
They provide 20MB free space with a banner ad, that’s how
They can make money and provide it free for you.
You can upgrade to two types of 100MB with banner free,
For 4.99$ or 8.33$/month.
No MP3 Pirate files allowed.

Wish it can help.
Take Care!

hahaha. I doubt that. I don't like the idea of getting sued. :p

Besides, I decided to go with Bit's option and I'll be using his space. I definitely don't want to get anybody else in trouble.

It's a shame there aren't more good torrent sites out there though. :icon8:

I know you already have things situated. N1 bitwise :icon14:

I don't know if anyone remembers but Viruseater has e-places.net

Looking at the packages and such the $5.99 package doesn't look bad either.

Since it's plug time we have to plug e-places.net since Viruseater
is still giving us the q3w server :icon25:

Well back to work so I can get home.

Nah, it just seems like a lot of hosts are putting file type restrictions on hosting plans lately. The main thing I was worried about was tossing up an mp3 every now and then.

You won't catch me hosting any torrents! :icon30:
