you're banned until everyone disconnects then it resets... it's mostly to get rid of annoying specs or whatever to free up a server for matches. a real guid ban is something the server admin would have to do, rather than a callvote.

On PB-enabled servers, pb_sv_kick allows an admin to kick a player for a number of minutes (or until the server is restarted).

I was bant by a ref... so its only valid till the server resets eh, and it resets when everyone leaves? How does a GUID ban work?

Your cd-key is assigned to a unique 10 (or more) digit number. Everyone's is different. You can't really spoof this number on a given machine at all, unless you buy a new game (and hence a new cd key). GUID banning means you are banned for good, unless the admin decides to reverse it. :paranoid:

You can also be banned per ip I think, which if your ip changes upon each session (like mine) you wouldn't be banned once your ip changes. I think that way an admin can choose to ban the entire subnet like chi.ameritech.net but I don't think they would resort to that.

Since it's purely related to Punkbuster the correct word is PB GUID (Global User IDentity). VQ3 bans on IP basis and PB can ban on ban on (partial) IP basis too. IP's can be added to a banlist that is part of the server config, so that bans are kept when restarting the server.

I didn't know about this though: :confused:
The cost of hacking on PunkBuster servers has just gone up significantly. PunkBuster now computes Hardware GUIDs for various pieces of hardware on players' systems while playing on PunkBuster servers. We use multiple private one-way hashes so that no serial number information for individual computers can be determined by admins or anyone else who may try to obtain this information from a Hardware GUID (and as always, no personal information of any kind is examined, stored or transmitted by PunkBuster). When players raise a violation that corresponds to hacking or interfering with PunkBuster's normal operation, we now (in addition to Global PB GUID bans) are Globally banning the new Hardware GUIDs across all games supported by PunkBuster (including games supported in the future). So punks who are determined to cheat so badly on PB-enabled servers that they try to hack PunkBuster may now need a new computer in addition to a new cdkey in order to return to PunkBuster servers. As with previous PB GUID Global bans, the new Hardware GUID bans are permanent and will not be lifted. As always, players who are affected by these Global bans will still be able to play on non-PB servers. Honest users should never "test" hacks that claim to interfere with PunkBuster. We have successfully tested this new feature set over the past few weeks for a few supported games and will be rolling it out to all supported games over the next few days and weeks. Additionally, PunkBuster servers will be updated to signify whether kicks for Global bans are for PB GUIDs or the new Hardware GUIDs.

I think that has been in effect since 2004.

Yep i forgot to mention the date of that news article, but i've never heard of a hardware GUID. Buying a new copy of the game won't circumvent a global GUID ban then. :o I suppose this will only happen when you really cheat repeatedly and get reported to PB.

I wonder if that hardware GUID ban thingy would work on Linux. PB doesn't run with root (administrator) privileges and, on top of that, hardware devices are represented as ordinary files[1] which the user running PB doesn't necessarily have read or write access to.

[1] Not really ordinary, but ordinary enough. From an application's POV there's no appreciable difference between writing to a regular file and a file representing the console, say.

Interesting point ^misantropia^

On the topic of vQ3's banning system I think it's one of the dumbest things Ive come upon, I was on a Call of Duty server and got banned for a reason I'd rather not go too into detail about.
Changed my MAC address on my router and restarted my cable modem and got a new ip.
Popped back in the server and the admin went "WTF didn't I ban you?"
"Yep"
lol =)

Then one of his guildmates said I should be banned again for hacking past the original ban :dork:

If someone decides to ban you from their server for whatever good or bad reason, why would you want to return there?
