Protests over editorial cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad turned violent Saturday in the Syrian capital as demonstrators set fire to the Danish, Chilean and Swedish embassies.

man o man. do these people honestly expect the rest of the world to walk on pins and needles in the fear we "may" offend something islamic? maybe we should start teaching islam in our public schools so everyone will know what may incite a muslim into a fit of bloody rage.

Watched Gandhi a few days ago, and it really makes things obvious.

Set off a few car bombs, blow up a cafe in isreal, burn down some embassy, what do you do? Unite the world in their belief that muslims are little more then savage uneducated people with rage issues. Shit, why is it that several european countries reprinted the cartoon if not to point out that at least some of the population are sick of actions of muslims? Even worse these people are giving the US and allies excuses to invade these countries and save them from themselves. Iran is next I have no doubt, maybe not now but eventually.

Meanwhile a true humanitarian disaster is ignored in Darfur, and North Korea, but they wont be helped because there is little point when it comes to the American bottom line.

There are other ways to make a point known then to go out and prove that the sterotype is true, but no, keep on acting like psychos, its sure gotten the Islamic groups a lot of respect so far.

There may be Christian radicals who overreact to all sorts of things, but they could never get away with anything like this. (They torched the Danish embassy in Syria.) People saying Christianity would react similarly are full of shit -- whoever it was a year or two ago made a play portraying Jesus as a homosexual and while there were some protests, I never even heard about the playwright/performers receiving death threats much less actually being physically threatened or attacked.

That said, the problem is not so much Islam (I don't think) as the Middle East. If the Christian zealots lived all together in a regressive, religiously-charged society where they made the laws and did as they pleased, I'm sure they would attempt this sort of stunt every time someone swore at Jesus too. But Christianity has mostly moved west, and as fucked up as some of the countries are over here we maintain law and order (in the secular sense) a bit better than Syria and Iran, methinks, so our religious nutters can't really get away with massive flag-burning demostrations. The last open KKK march was how many decades ago?

And for the people bringing Judaism into this, it's true that lots of people go on the defensive when someone breaks out the anti-Semitism, but I would say that is usually triggered politically and not religiously. Christians have Jesus's image to protect, Muslims have Muhammed and Ibrahim and whoever, but the Jews don't really have that same omg-you-insulted-our-religious-figurehead sort of personnage since it's harder to portray God in a specifically Jewish manner. The Jews usually just go apeshit when someone important criticizes Israel.

So yes, fuck all religious extremists, but fuck the middle eastern radical muslims most of all because they are the only ones (out of the big three, anyway) horribly oppressing people.
