Laptop internet connectivity woes

Strange things are afoot, yo. I suddenly couldn't connect to my wireless network from a place in my house that usually has zero problems. I'm starting to think that it's my router (DLINK DI-624), as the signal strength starts out high then drops to a reported 1Mbps after a bit. Absolutely cannot connect to the internet, and on top of it all, I can't remember my admin password for my router.

Help?

no joke - i have the same router (on my second one, but it's currently in a drawer) and it's been nothing but trouble. update to the latest firmware, WPA and WEP work fine, but router reboots every few minutes. roll back a couple of updates and the router will absolutely not work wirelessly, but WPA and WEP work. one of the updates renders the exact symptoms you are describing with either dns issues or horrible speeds.

if i were you i'd get another brand of router, but in the mean time all i can recommend is to reset to defaults and start over. it'll probably clear up your issue for the time being.

btw, i've setup more than a few Linksys WRT54G's with nothing but painless setups and great reliability ending with happy clients. i now own one as well and have absolutely no issues what-so-ever.

Try admin/admin for the user/password. If its not that, you might have to do a factory reset and it should default to admin/admin on DLINK routers I believe.

Juggs, about the WRT54G i do agree.. .

one thing that i noticed is when you leave torrents or other things that use alot of constant connections running.. the router starts to lagg...

i mean, it takes ~10-30 seconds to load google.

its interesting to say the least, i am trying to find the cause...

You can also hard reset the router to regain access.

Hmm I could of sworn it resets to admin/admin, but I havent factory reset my router for a long long time.

The only strange thing here is that I can connect to the net wirelessly with my PDA.
When I do an ipconfig/release and /renew, it pukes saying it can't contact the DHCP server.

try one of the other firmware releases. i had that exact same problem with the router too.

Updated to the latest firmware, no change. The wired connection on my laptop works just fine, so it seems to be limited to the wireless functionality. Pissing me off, too.

It's the laptop. I couldn't connect to the school's wireless network, either. I keep seeing references to TCP/IP not being enabled, any ideas?

Formatted and reinstalled, don't know if it was the integrated Broadcom driver or the OS, but it works again.

Now if I can just get my sound to work...

Yeah, I got the driver install pkg from the laptop vendor, it kept bitching about not finding the driver itself. I reinstalled it manually and sound works now.
