I just realized verify game integrity would do little as you would have fresh downloaded game content to begin with, little reason to think they would corrupt themselves so fast... my bad :paranoid:

Alright dz, I've downloaded HLDM ( it's 100% ready!) and currently downloading CS:S.
Call me a pessimist but I don't reckon it'll make any difference. But here's hoping! If it does, I'll let you and Foo beat me at quake3. Just this once mind :p

i know this sounds trivial at best, but are you running a software firewall? :o

Well I seem to have got it working.
First of all, it loaded fast into a load screen of an earlier save game so I thought everything was ok.
Then I loaded the save game which gave me a problem and it did it again, and after a few seconds the screen graphics went loopy, loads of lines and stuff. Second time I tried, no funny imaging but stopped at the load screen. Then I remembered that I hadn't unmounted the image that I'd earlier extracted from the DVD from alcohol, so I did that. Loaded save game, thought it was stalling again but after about a minute or two it actually went through. zomg! Went through all the bit where he gets his suit and gets into the teleporter but the sound and animation kept stuttering in a similar way things stutter when you first join a Q3 pb server. I don't know if it'll do that again, if so, medium graphics perhaps.
I've no idea if downloading CS source and HLDM made a difference or simply unmounting the image but thanks guys it seems to be working now.

Yep, cheers anyway amidy. Here's my thread at steam. I can't help thinking HL2 requires more ram, video card memory and cpu power than doom3. My card has 128mb memory, I think it probably needs 256mb, and perhaps I need 1Gb ram minimum instead of 768mb.

That isn't it. Your system is more than capable of running HL2 if it runs Doom3.

That's what I was thinking. Well, the default high quality settings for model, shader, texture and shadow details and high dynamic range ( ' *Settings recommended for your system' ??) seemed to be causing the problem. Or at least, some of those settings. I've changed them to medium, low and bloom and everything is running fine now, load screens seem to be consistently working. I tried change back to high settings once I'd loaded a new scene and it worked but again there was stuttering and load screen problems again. So I'm staying on these settings now as the stuttering seems to have gone pretty much. Makes me wonder why the game recommended settings my system couldn't handle.

Haven't tried that, not even sure what high dynamic range does. Do you mean disable that but put other things back to high?

When I enable HDR on mine it just about triples my load times. Yeah, you might give that a shot.

It looks a bit better, but it's definately a performance hit.

Turn off the HDR.. you have a 9800pro, its useless anyways as the card dont really do true HDR :)
[size=75][i]I once had a glass of milk.

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I am now sick.

Hey, I must say, disabling bloom seems to help a lot because I was able to run the game nicely just now with all those settings on high and no problem with loading. There was still some stuttering on the teleporter scene but taking texture details down to medium reduced that a lot. Cool, virtually got all those high settings back.

Here's a weird thing but doesn't seem to affect anything ingame. Look at this screenshot. Most of the thumbnails have red lines. Any idea?

Mike had that problem on a 9700 on HL2.

I don't know how or if it was resolved. I'll prod him if I see him online.

not to flame here but you do know there is multiple ways to do hdr. don't be a victim of marketing.

edit: his 9800 pro is doing the same hdr as your 7800 in hl2 btw. there is no seperate hdr for different cards. hl2 hdr can do AA and hdr at the same time.

Just in the shots. No lines in the game.

And it dont do TRUE hdr..

While it can do the lower end effects and simulate it, the card itself cant really HANDLE it..

Not hating, i owned a 9800pro, but yeah..
