Time to upgrade my gaming rig, need some help picking parts.

Post by FragaGeddon »

My current system consists of:

Motherboard: ASUS A7N8X-X
CPU: AMD Barton 1200+ something like that w/333mhz fsb
Graphics Card: BFG GeForce 6800 GT
Memory: Corsair DDR-SDRAM PC3200 - 256 MBytes x 2

I guess I should be looking for a 64bit system since the other crap is obsolete now. But I'd like to find a board that offers an AGP slot.
Also need a processor and maybe 1 gig of ram.
Really don't want to spend more than $500-600 canadian.

So I'd like some recommendations.
Thanks.

I have the a7n8x-e board, just bout a set of ocz 2gb dual ddr pc3200 and a 6800gs 256mb. She runs games like silk. buy some more ram and wait a bit, hell you could even buy a xp 3200+ 400fsb for very cheap.

And I have no idea why the fsb is running at 99mhz on this thing.

I've also taken pics of the BIOS settings that I can upload if someone wants to look at it.

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I think ASROCK makes a socket 939 board that has an AGP 8x and PCIE 16x slot.

You'll want to go with 2 gigs of RAM. The PC3200 you have is fine but most mother boards only have 3 or 4 slots. So you might want to sell your current system as a mobo/CPU/RAM combo and get yourself (2) 1gig sticks of matched pair RAM.

You might also look into the lower level opterons when you buy the CPU. They are 64 bit, dual core chips, with 1MB of L2 cache on each core. Unlike most of the AMD X2 chips that are only 512kB on each core. The opterons are cheaper too. I've O/c'd my opteron 175 and it's faster than a FX57. It also out performs the X24800 is some tests.

I'm guessing socket 939 is the best type motherboard to get?
Is that how many pins are on the cpu?

$223

that mobo you already possess is still damn good, all you need is the cpu and ram upgrade
I was looking at that, just not sure about zipzoomfly though.
I'll just throw it on my Visa and I'll be good.

And I'll probably get a gig or 2 of ram.

Well I might be buying a 64bit board and processor.
The only one from ASUS is this one that has an AGP slot:

It seems like the ASrock is a cheap man's motherboard.

I'm in Canada, but they don't have the processor (AMD Athlon XP 3200+ 2.2GHz 400FSB 512KB) I'm looking for.
Might have to go for 64 bit board and processor. Just need a decent board with an AGP slot.
Asus has one, but I'm not sure if it's good for gaming.

Well I might just have to buy that board.
Now I just have to pick out my processor and ram.

Well I guess I might go with these:

Motherboard
CPU

And if someone could help me pick out some ram either from hereor here.

Want at least 1 gig of ram and running at least 200mhz.

And if anyone suggest I use something different, please say so.
