16 bit wifi PC card + old laptop

Post by Massive Quasars »

The card: D-link DWL-650 (Rev. P)

I've managed to load the driver and it seems to function properly, no explicit problems were brought to my attention through the device manager.

Except...

The problem is that I can't actually use the card because Windows 98 has no built in Wifi scanner software and such software won't recognize the card as a wireless network device. As far as the software and OS is concerned, the card is simply a network device.

I need the most basic of Wifi scanning software that will recognize this card in order to scan and connect to Wifi networks.

Your help would be appreciated. TIA.

Indeed. But I figure the most serious problems have been overcome, this last hurdle shouldn't be insurmountable.

The floor is still open for suggestions.

Have you tried ipconfig to see if it may already be getting an address?

you need to see if you can gid up software for d-link cards in general that would allow you to have a gui..

but getting 98 working on wireless is a chore and it is never quite right.

And checking the properties of the network card itself doesn't give you any options on connecting?

Also, was there not any software installed with the drivers? Normally the connection software is installed with the network card drivers.

Did it even ask you any configuration questions during the driver installation?

I tried many things R00k, as far as the OS and software is concerned I've got myself a standard NIC in the form of a PC card. Both cannot fathom that this card communicates through the air.

Amidy, the included D-link program doesn't recognize it's own device even when the driver is properly installed. It gives me an error something to the effect of it not finding the device. The program doesn't even open, just the error window.

I have access to the TCP/IP properties and I have access to the device manager window for the device. The latter allows me to change the card's settings and it's explicitly clear that the settings are that of a wifi card rather than NIC card. The driver function properly but I do not know of software that will recognize the card for what it is and use it to simply search and connect to a network.
