Adding slower memory

Post by Scourge »

Currently I have 512 of pc3200 400mhz installed. I just got my hands on 512 of pc2700 333 mhz. If I add this to my system will the slowdown on the memory make it not worth the amount tradeoff?

Easy enough to test it with Sandra. You'll lose some memory bandwidth of course.

If you're playing games like BF2/Planetside/other modern games, I think you'll get more benefit from a gig of slower ram than 512Mb of fast stuff.

Just wondered if it would be that noticable compared to the increase in amount. I'm starting to notice that 512 isn't enough anymore even for me. Mostly loading games is where I notice it. I'm going to go ahead and throw it in and do some testing. I am however going to get some compatable memory soon enough. This is just to hold me over until then.

That's what I was hoping for. For now it's just stuff like FarCry, D3, HL2, etc. But yeah, gaming is what I'll be using it for mostly.

Sweet, does anybody know if you can mix ddr2 and ddr?

I have 2x 256 DDR2400 right now, and it's so damn expensive some times and i have shitloads of ddr400 laying around (at least another half gig), if it's in the other channel (i have 2 channels for my ram) can i use it?
Why not?

Jenny: lol, i'm not changing the whole harddrive directory structure for a mod. Do it proper like other mods please.

you can't mix DDR and DDR2

Intel: DDR2

AMD: DDR (so far)
