Laptop + Storage Box

Post by ek »

Howdy,

My mate handed me down his old box, p3 500, 512mbs of ram, and a 60 gig HDD.
I would like to know, what is the easiest way to set this box up as a fileserver/storage box without a monitor?
I am currently on my laptop, and I am connected to the net via a DLINK DSL 504G router.
Thanks for your help, I shall do some googling aswell.

Easiest?

Install windows, configure shared folders, FTP server (zFTP Server is nice and easy), eMule with web interface and Azureus with web interface, and a flavour of VNC Server.

Locate in a corner somewhere, connect to router, remove monitor.

That would do the trick rather nicely. If you have XP installed you could also use the built-in Remote Desktop Connection to remotely administer the station, or VNC. Either works.

I also recommend using the remote desktop with the file server. thats what i've been doing and it works great.

Ahh thanks guys, I chose Torm's setup, was hassle free. Now I got some space where I can back my stuff up. :icon25:
