New player questions...

Post by Xenden »

Hey just got this excellent game but I have a few questions as i'm quite new to the pc version of quake (played the ps1 version of quake 2 relgiously!)

1: Is there anything i have to do to get a decent ping? I go on servers which ping at 42 for me but when i get ingame, my ping is anything from 100-200.

2: Any essential map/character packs I should get? I have already downloaded the latest point release but i'm sure there is some excellent unofficial map packs that a lot of servers use.

3: Any good mods worth getting?

Just a big thanks in advance for reading my topic.

Thanks in advance for reading the stickies.

In reference to #2 and 3:

Quake 3 is one of the most widely player customized games ever and has some seriously enjoyable mods and shiz. Get them.

Go me too.

Your first question I think is answered in the stickies. With Quake 3 the emphasis tends to be on the gameplay itself rather than the diversity of extra characters/graphics and such. You can find those things if you want, there's a lot of awesome addon skins/models/graphics out there for the game... but where the real meat is, IMO, is the addon maps and mods.

OSP is the most significant mod. You may also be interested in Rocket Arena and Challenge Promode, both excellent.

None of these mods radically change the game, more that they enhance it in various ways.

In terms of extra maps, there's a whole bunch bundled with the 3 mods above. If you make it through all of those, you'll be at a point where you'll know where to find lots more :)
