XP pro 64bit 120 day free trial

Post by Scourge »

Did a search and didn't see this posted anywhere. Free trial of the 64 bit XP pro edition. Doesn't work with 64 bit Intel Itaniums though.

Is it worse than 32 bit XP?

Do you have any reason to run it? I suppose if you have a 64 bit chip, and apps that are ready to take advantage, it would be ok

*cough* it seems that my old Thread about this was Cropped... Meh,

anyway, i ran it a few times now, and i finally was able to track down all the drivers for my hardware.

i would still say not to worry about it for now, Seriously, its nothing special. Actually, it works a fair amount slower then the 32-bit virsion ( 10-15 seconds slower on start up alone ).

it crashed on me twice, Gave me random Pauses and etc... i am runnin 32-bit again, and i am not gettin on any 64-bit o/s that microwank has made untill Vista.

so, you base your choice on that, Download it and give er, atleast you can say that you have done it :)

Fair enough. I'm going to install it on a seperate drive for a test run anyway. :)

It'd be interesting if you played Far Cry. Didn't one of those HL2 expansion pack/sequel use x86-64 too? Apart from that, there's not a whole apps/games that take advantage of the 64-bit extensions.

Those were the main ones Iwas thinking of. I know there aren't a whole lot of apps that use 64 bit, but it would be nice to have it there for the ones that do. I would mainly use it as an extra OS for the 64 bit games and such leaving my 32 bit as a triple boot.

I'd say take the test run, but don't bother buying it, seeing as Vista is almost right around the corner, I'd be dumb paying for 2 os's

Yeah, that's really all I wanted to do. Mainly to help me decide if I need to go with Vista or just wait. I'm also trying out various 64 bit linux distros too.

Apps and games should be more and more mainstream before the end of the year, so yeah, if that's what you're going for it wouldn't hurt to run a 64bit os.

Got it up and running, first off my loading screen went from around 8 second to around 2. Big plus already. Getting the 64 bit Far Cry to see how that goes. So far I like it.

edit: Drawback. My sound card is too old and doesnt have 64 bit support. :( Having trouble getting the onboard to work as well.

edit2: Doh!, it usually helps to actually unplug the speakers from the sound card and plug them into the onboard when trying to get sound. :icon30:

On my old Athlon xp 2200+ it took around 15 to 20 seconds on the loading screen. Then went down to around 8 when I upgraded to the A64 3000+, now its down to 2 or 3. Getting better all the time.

Run a good defragger like Perfectdisk, and MS Bootvis perhaps?
