Namibia might be ok. It's probably hot since most of it's a desert, but it's right on the ocean and there's little malaria threat because of the climate.

I can understand why you'd say that, but there are a LOT of places in Africa that are extremely fucking dangerous. A lot of the continent is very harsh climate-wise, they DO have the occasional famine there. Then there's the lovely genocides that so many folks seem to be fond of...
I'm sure that there are loads of places that are safe enough and would provide plenty of enjoyment and adventure, but there are just as many that you'd do well to stay the hell out of. Much like New York City.

Famine is not caused by lack of food, it's caused by politics and improper distribution of resources. It's not really a climatic issue. Usually when famine occurs, there are warehouses chock full of food near by, but the aid agencies are too inept to work with the local governments on a distrubtion plan.

Two of my aunts did complimentary philanthropic work in Africa, one peace corps during the mid-eighties, one in Botswana now, and both have contracted malaria. It's a lifelong illness from what I understand. They both had gammaglobulin treatments ("immunization") beforehand, as well. Just a bit of precautionary advice.

woke up and said to myself wtf am i doing going to Africa .

but i'm going anyway .. sounds like my freind really needs me ..he calls me Ax as a joke all the time.

Ax, this is not a scary place - ask Doug. This could be a real opportunity for you and who knows where it will take you. I will share with you my first opportunity to go overseas with BHP. I expressed concern about living in London and the high prices when I had two small kids to support. The manager said to me: "sometimes you have to take a leap of faith". Ax, if you decide to come and things are not going as you expect we can make adjustments. That is the same thing the BHP manager told me and I never went back to him for anything. The overseas thing recharged my career, my life and my family. And hey, look where I ended up!

Yeah, I'm going to have to disagree with you here. The famine in Ethiopia years ago, the one last year in Niger, and the current one across the entire horn of Africa, they've all been caused by drought and death of livestock. It's a pretty simple formula here...

Africa, a bit depressing IMO but after freezing your nuts off a couple of years in snowyland can understand the need for a change of scenery.

Only drink bottled water
Don't drink anything with ice in it unless you made the ice yourself
Don't shag the locals, however attractive/cheap they may be...
Food - boil it peel it or leave it
Keep up with the malaria tablets before you go and when you get back
Bathe in factor 87 sunscreen every morning and afternoon
Do everything slowwwwwly
Don't wander off anywhere alone
Lock up safe at night
Don't give anyone your home address
Don't buy too many wood carvings..

The novelty may wear off after a while but hey you only live once and there'll be plenty of stories to tell the family - and us of course

aren't you supposed to be pretty self reliant in your job survivor style? you'll be fine go to africa. You can't put a price on such an experiance

having different perspectives from experiances like these is one of my most personal prized(sp?) posessions.

won't be going for 3 months or so .. could be gone 6 months to a year .

looks like my job is to train the workers ,show them what i know and apparently help them to make desicions on their own etc

honestly that's exactly what i do here with the Inuit and Indians up here daily so this is second nature to me just a lot hotter.

those who know me know i am quite a patient guy and that's what this job will need.

i'm basically an overpaid babysitter as per usual .
i like a challenge
