After playing the demo for some time, I finally found a place to order my Quake Gold CD and it is finally here..
Well, I installed it and started to play. Found there were very few online servers, so I started some research. It was not longer before I located the 1.30 point release which I installed over the retail Quake III. This got me many more servers, but then I found the selection of serves in Quake III is usless with so many servers out there, and located the beginner's guide here which points you to the XFire tool.
The next problem I ran into is the protocol for the different versions. It seems many servers do not use the 1.30 release and are not usable. I located the version changer (Ofx, Q3 versin switch) which seems to get me going on some of the older servers I like, but I have to keep switching to use the different servers.
The other MAJOR problem I have run into is that many of the sites I try which have PB enabled (and I have it enable on mine), keeps kicking me off thier servers with an "unpure" client referrencing pkg3. So far I have not been able to get past this point. The only things I installed are listed above, and have not installed any mods
other than the pbsetup with all checks out okay :icon23:
I spent four hours digging through this last night with no real solutions. Beyond the above problems, I find that many of the servers kick back with mismatched version (not the protocol issue above) or missing maps.
Is there an easier way? I would just like to play some Quake (most of the time TDM rail freeze) along with some of the new features of the full game. Any ideas?
Moved from Demo to Quake Gold..

In order to start playing, first you must update the game with the latest patch, Point Release 1.32. This update includes up-to-date game fixes as well as PunkBuster, Anti-Cheat software used to prevent online cheating.
In order to join PunkBuster enabled servers you must type "/pb_cl_enable" in the console (press the tilde key: ~ on your keyboard to open the console while in-game). In addition, you should enter "/pb_sleep 500" and "/pb_system 1" in the console in order to reduce any slowdown or stuttering due to PunkBuster's scanning.
Afterwords, you should download PBSetup ( http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php ), which will allow you to auto-update update PunkBuster.
I suggest you download and install All-Seeing Eye ( http://videogames.yahoo.com/multiplayer ) to browse for game servers. While not necessary, ASE is far superior to the in-game browser, therefore I suggest you use it. Open the All-Seeing Eye program. In ASE, under the Game column, you'll find what mod the server is running. Baseq3 refers to a server running w/o any modifications. If you don't have the mod that the server is running you'll have to download it (use google to locate mod developers website and the corresponding mod files). Rocket Arena 3, Threewave, OSP, DeFraG, CPMA and Urban Terror are some of the more popular mods, just to name a few.
Also, you can filter servers according the version they are running, so only 1.32 servers are displayed (located in the left pane under the Quake III Arena tree and Version subtree). In this way you set ASE to filter out every other version except the latest, 1.32.
Finally I urge you to check out the sticky threads at the top of this forum, it may answer any additional questions you may have.
Good Luck!
