It's all unproductive idle chatter about completely unprovable things... it passes the time, but christ what's the point.
The same could be said about string theory.

The difference is someday we'll find a way to improve our lives with string theory, while religion has never improved anyone's life.

joy and young girls? the delusional comfort gained by believing an invisible man in the sky loves you, even though no real people do? fake bread and real wine? a name to put to your otherwise confusing feelings of white guilt? real bread and fake wine? an inexplicable immunity to rattlesnake venom?

I think what he's saying is that spirituality can be derived from many things, religion is just one of them.

But when you look up 'spirituality' in the dictionary you notice the term implies the existance of a soul or a spirit... which points to religion again.

Confusing.

You obviously can't comphrehend the scope of my comment since you seem to have been offended by it.

I can give a thousand reasons why computers, medical advancement, engineering and science in general have improved our lives....but I shouldn't have to list them here.

So far, religion has given mankind war, intolerance, narrow-mindedness and emotional immaturity. Since the dawn of time people have used religion for control, have justified horrible crimes in the name of scripture and created new reasons for animosity and distrust. Not to mention the fact that religion has generally kept humanity from progressing and in the proverbial "dark ages" for a long fucking time.

Please enlighten me as to how religion has actually improved someone's life beyond giving "hope" to someone. I don't want to hear crap about "morality" and "best intentions" (since neither of those are quantifiable improvements to life), so how about telling me something actually substantial that religion has done to IMPROVE people's lives....rather than destroying them.

Now....please keep in mind that more than half of all people that say they're "religious" don't even PRACTICE what their religion says. With this simple fact staring you in the face, how can you say people's lives have improved by something they don't even acknowledge? Unless you think "being fearful of a vengeful God" is somehow an improvement in your life.

So again....please enlighten me as to how religion has actually improved someone's life.

Actualy my whole point is exactly that. Without religion we would not have become as advanced as we are today. That isn't to say what we thought at the time was correct but it did help guide us as a civilization to where we are now, which of course is at a technological age where religion is being questioned more strongly.

But don't blame the infrastructure we've set in place for the negative things that affect our world because the way we choose to evolve is as equaly responsible for the conflict as any other reason.

This is the problem.

Kracus wrote:I've been thinking about this and I think perhaps I've been going about things the wrong way. I've always been very blunt about my thoughts on religion and their long lasting effect on humankind and I think I may have realized something interesting. It is not JUST religion that causes unrest and many issues in the world but the evolution of mankind. We as a species are becomming more and more aware of our surroundings and as we become aware we fight back against ancient ideas and theory's that were obviously incorrect.

The social result of this of course is largescale disagreements between factions that beleive differently but it is not either factions fault but rather the evolution of one of the two factions that has determined the other to be incorrect. No matter what way you view this Correct or incorrect either way a social order will be established and peace will reign (somewhat) no matter what control mechanism is instituted. religion or otherwise.

So it is not religion that is to blame but our own self education as a species.
To summarise what you said, yes religions are based around ancient beliefs and myths which are totally unapplicable and unbelievable in light of modern society, but this realisation is not a new or unique concept.

Way to completely miss my point.

You took what I said and turned it 180 degrees to bolster your arguement.

Dumb schmuck.
