Quake 2 Problems... Yes... Quake 2

Post by gblakk »

I recently decided to start playing quake 2 again (bored I guess). I just happen to have bought a new Dell computer and setup a wireless network.

the computer is a Dell XPS 400 (2.8ghz, 1000gb ram ect). I also set up a wireless network between my new and my old computer using a Netgear router, and netgear adapter. I had no problems running Q2 on my old comp however when playing on the new comp I get kicked off of servers just about every other game after about 5-10 minutes of play. The reason for this according to the server(s) I've been kicked from is either a) "modified client" or b) for using speedhack.... neither of which I'm using.

Ive even installed NoCheat 2.34 and still have been kicked for the same reasons.

The OS is XP media center edition, CPU Intel 2.8ghz, Netgear router, fresh Q2 install with 3.20 patch..... Has anyone had the same problem or knows what I'm running into? Any help would be appreicated.

Ok Im totally talking out of my ass here since I've never even glanced at the code for Quake 2. But could it be possible that the game has a set speed cap that it considers regular and anything higher is considered a speed hack?
So, if the timing is written poorly then the speed of movement would be higher on a faster computer meaning you would pass the "regular" speed cap and be considered cheating.

I only say this because I botched up my timing function in a game Im working on and tested it on a computer with a Pentium 4 processor instead of an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ processor and my character moved about 60 times faster than it should have.

I've since fixed that error though.

Move your config to a different folder and then run the game (it will recreate the config with stock settings). Then see if you are having the same problem still.

Speedhack is what always gets me nowadays, and I was told it's due to fluctuating ping - you know, when you come out of lag and you go super fast server-side. Chances are if you ping high, this could be your problem.

Then again I've been kicked for just about everything in Quake2 but have never cheated, so hopefully it works for you!
