Computer hangs on certain tasks related to cd-rom

Generally my computer runs fine, no bugs no virii. There is just one thing that I can't get rid of and I know it to be related to my cd-rom.

The case for the cd-rom is this; it works fine and has no problem reading any cds. The only problem itself has that it will not always open when I press the eject button.
Now on to the computer. As said everything runs fine untill it has to deal with the cd-rom player. If I open windows explorer 50% of the time the computer will hang for quite a while with the cd drive spinning furiously. If I eject, wait till it's over and then close the player everything's fine. The same thing happens when games or applications need to read things from the cd-rom or I need to specify a location for something to download.

Any ideas?

Hmm.. I'v had this problem before and I bet you somtimes can't find the CD rom drive in my computer either? How old is your CD drive and what speed is it? There's a chance it could just be too old and a bit knackered. You could try a lense cleaner CD for starters, but if it's older than say 5 yrs, I would just go out a grab a new one, they only cost about £20 - £30 for a cheep one.

If there are no virus's on the computer then the only other software relaited possibility I can think of and that is the drivers you have (or dont have) installed could be missing or corrupt. If thats the case, you need to find out who made the drive and download a driver update from the internet.

It's less than a year old and 56x speed. Lens cleaning is done periodically. Drivers are the normal atapi and the second drive doesn't have the problems of the first so it isn't the drivers. I know the usual stuff and if it was that it would be easy.

Detection tool? Though I don't remember installing anything newer than about 1,5 years old.

Go into device manager, make sure to select View Hidden Devices, then look for any Starforce entries under the 'Non-Plug-and-Play Drivers' section.

Only found secdrv, seems to be a part of securom not starforce.

Try disabling all bits of drive autorun, sometimes this will choke certain components for whatever reason. I think the easiest way to do it is via tweakui.

Properties
Autorun tab
Select the first bullet
Click Take no action
Click ok

Well, i've disabled secdrv and also turned of autorun. I'll let it run for a few days to see how it goes.
