Yeah, easy for a Quake players to say. But the reason a lot of those players stick with UT and not Quake is because of the secondary fire on the weapons. I never liked it, but it's just as easy to say that it adds another dimension to the game which is why a lot of UT players prefer Unreal over Quake.seremtan wrote:UT is one of those franchises that if they stripped it down closer to the basics would be amazing. the engines are great, and epic have some half-decent level designers, but the weapons setup is so retarded with all the 2ndary fire mode crap. Q3 was nice and simple
If they stripped it down they'd lose a lot of their fanbase they have now, and a lot of people that don't like the secondary fire still wouldn't want to play it because of the fact that it's UT.

It's almost embarrasing as someone who's spent time with Quake 1,Quake 3, UT and UT2004 in almost equal proportions, to be reading some of the truly meaningless reasoning people will come up with for slating one of those games against another.
Having a personal preference does not equate to holding an informed opinion kids. You do more of a disservice to the game communities you are a part of by spewing crap like that than you harm the ones you dislike.

if i have a personal preference these days, it's for UT2K4. it's a good game, good enough for me to play pretty much every day, just not amazingFoo wrote:It's almost embarrasing as someone who's spent time with Quake 1,Quake 3, UT and UT2004 in almost equal proportions, to be reading some of the truly meaningless reasoning people will come up with for slating one of those games against another.

that's my informed opinion btw
Eh, I liked most of the maps, I think for the most part they've done a good job in map design. Weapons seem to be either hit or miss with people - either they love them or hate them. And I have yet to play a game with better physics than Q3...it's just got everyone spoiled. Aliens vs Predator Gold has awesome physics, but it's not that popular.Grudge wrote:My personal preference is that the UT franchise sucks ass. Shitty weapons, shitty movement physics, shitty art direction.

Bleh, at work we still have fun with the original UT occasionally. Deck16 is still major fun.
There's a lot of things to complain about, but in the end, if you just shut the fuck up and enjoy the game and fun for a bit, you'll notice you can have impossible amounts of fun with an "inferior" game like Unreal Tournament. Even UT2004 is bloody good fun. Sure, it's different than Quake 3 and IMO Q3 is a far more pure and intense game than UT2004, but it's still fun to play UT2004 and in the end, that's what it's about.

I actually started with UT back in the day, but soon switched over to Q3. I've said it before and i'll say it again - Q3A is a PERFECT mp game in every way for me. The fact that i'm still playing it almost 7 years after release is testament to that.
UT was fun in a gimmicky sort of way. UT2004 tried to ape Q3 so bad it was sickening. It wasn't particularly bad, but it just didn't have the magic that Q3 has.
And i'm not a quake/id fanboy in the slightest. Doom 3 was pretty boring, and Q4 just plain sucks in MP.

...I've played a very luttle UT (don't remember which one) at my uncle's house and another version at some computer store while I was browsing new games it was available for testing or w/e. What I found the most frusterating, and this is just from the past, I was not impressed by the weapons, actually more confused if anything, but I was still a n00b to most FPS, so yea, but also it seemed like there was no point to the game? Is there a story or something to go with it? Like Quake III I guess is about you being trapped in some alternate dimention in which you must "kill or be killed" and then I guess theres a game called QIII revolution (or something with an r) for PS2 in which you battle through these deathmatches and your "captors" set you free finally...yea, I dunno. But whats with the UT story? Also, the maps and graphics I remeber where impressive...thats about it.
