a defining attribute of a government is that it has a monopoly on the legitimate exercise of violence...

better vid...cuts off only the first joke about the black SUVs and the NSA.
Edit: Julios -
Colbert is speaking at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Broadcasted live on C-Span and I'm sure they'll replay it a few times tomorrow.
Bush is really there - only feet away while Colbert is ripping on the administration and media for 20+ mins. (He looks over right at Bush half the time he's insulting him).
I'm not too sure why they invited Colbert to speak(?). Although obviously glad he did.

Yeah, my favorite part of the speach was when he looks right over at Bush talking about the 32% approval rating - and not to look at in terms of the glass being half full/empty, but that the glass is 2/3rds empty.[xeno]Julios wrote:that was fucking surreal -
best part was all those confused and uncomfortable primates in the audience...
the video skit at the end was terrible tho... wtf was colbert thinking? perhaps it was meant to be some sort of subversive influence thingie but as comedy it sucked.
The skit at the end sucked, but iirc Clinton did a skit with the same woman when he was in office. So maybe a tribute? I'm too lazy to look for the link right now, may update later if I can find it.
If you've watched whitehouse press conferences very often, you'd understand why it was funny[xeno]Julios wrote:that was fucking surreal -

Nevermind, I was wrong. Here's what I was thinking of - Clinton's 2000 Whitehouse Correspondents' Dinner: http://politicalhumor.about.com/library ... svideo.htmctrlnuke wrote:...The skit at the end sucked, but iirc Clinton did a skit with the same woman when he was in office. The woman only has 1 line in the very beginning.

Sorry Jules, but that was just about the best part of the video for me.[xeno]Julios wrote: i've seen em before - the press conference itself was so so - it was the overdrawn chase at the end with the stupid NOOOOOOOO

His jokes don't seem to fly with an audience unfamiliar with his work, yet he still managed to find their collective funny bone at times.

This is just surreal. I can't imagine how Stephen Colbert was allowed to speak. He definitely didn't make any friends in the room.
Maybe it's part of the president's attempt to ingratiate himself with the public again, but I'm thinking it backfired a little if that's the case.
And the glacier joke was slipped in there very nicely.
