adjusting the brightness slider does fuck all

i found my cdkey on a CDR and downloaded and installed quake with the intention of indulging in a bit of nostalgia, but it's really dark and adjusting the brightness slider doesn't do anything, what do i do? :<

i'm on a 9800pro if it's helpful

yep, other than that it's a completely clean install.
