My vid card fan is making an awful noise
So before I find another one, how bad of an idea would it be to just unplug it? The card is an ATI Radeon 9000 PRO. The computer is on 24/7 and I don't play any games.
I doubt you'd get away with it.
Same logic as taking the fan off your CPU because you rarely take the processor to 100% usage. It'll still fuck up.
You need a new one or a replacement card, or leave it until the card dies. The fan on my old GF4 fucked up but the card kept going with a noisy fan for 6 months or so before I had to strip it down.

just take the fan off and lube it up with some lightweight oil. on the underside there should be a couple stickers that cover the mechanics. just put a little oil on the spindle and o-ring. the fan should spin more freely just by hand.
it can be easily prevented if you clean your case out regularly and the immediate area around the case. computers are dust traps.

Its a radeon 9000, honestly, it could run with no fan for a long ass time.. my 9000 pro waaay back had no fan, was just a super shitty heatsink.. it got hot as hell, but never died..

[size=75][i]I once had a glass of milk.
It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.
I am now sick.

Interesting. I carefully looked at mine, its capacitors are fine, one is a bit bloated though. I'm afraid that if I remove the fan it will all go to hell just like my motherboard did (remember when I took off the northbridge fan off my Gigabyte and the capacitors leaked which cause the thing to fuck off? yeah).SOAPboy wrote:Its a radeon 9000, honestly, it could run with no fan for a long ass time.. my 9000 pro waaay back had no fan, was just a super shitty heatsink.. it got hot as hell, but never died..
