Running Quake3 on a bobbing link...

Hi all,

Firstly, i'm really glad Q3 is still going I'm a massive fan and really enjoy playing it still. :icon31:

I'm new to this online gaming milarky, and am sturggling a little to play Q3 online.

My main problem is the internet connection I recieve is though a wireless connection via a couple of repeaters and so as such, drops 3/4 ICMP pings every 30 or so, which when you are playing Quake3 is really annoying as it pauses with the network icon flashing bottom left hand corner every time the link is lost.

My question is, is there a utility/patch which will allow for a certain amount of network glitches so the game doesn't freeze up? I've been playing UT2004 today, and with the same network connection, from my perspective, works perfectly, as it must allow for a certain amount of dropped packets in a connection. But I don't want to play UT2004, I want to play Q3!


Finally, using Game Spy I can't get a single Quake 3 game to work correctly, it just sits there on the connecting counter. I only today stumbled across a way of finding games via the Q3 Internet search for games facility.....

Try turning down the settings for:

\rate
\cl_maxpackets
\cl_packetdup
\snaps
oh and:
\com_maxfps

UT can deal with regular short disconnects because it's happy to keep predicting events for even seconds at a time. Q3 is much more dependant upon the direct connection information. The upside is the game is more responsive and accurate to what's really happening on the server, the downside is if you're disconnected, that's also accurately and responsively apparent

It's driving me up the wall my wireless cack!

Pinging the main router in the house after a lot of fafing around it worked fairly perfectly just droping the odd packet last night*. This morning without any changes it's back to dropping 5 pings at a go..... I originally thought I had cracked it by removing the belkin ultility once it had found and established a connection. My theory was that it might have been bringing the network down by checking for new networks every 5 seconds or so........wasn't the case though by the look of it

Anyhow, I did manage a few games last night, and all I can say is wow, the level of play is brilliant, some people play the game unbelievably well :icon28: :icon31: AWESOME :icon31:

I have a belkin wireless router at the other corner of the house to this pc and have the exact same issue. I've tried every channel and option I can think of but to no avail. My IBM laptop with it's inbuilt wireless network card has no issues with the signal (though it's not strong) at this distance. So I guess it's the belkin wireless network hardware. In the end I simply gave in and purchase a nice bright blue 30m cable and have ran it neatly from the router to here. No more loss of connection which is just perfect for playing Q3

I'm not sure with mine, definately Belkin issue of some sort.

Try switching to channel eleven, then run a continous ping to you router, give it a minute to settle down, then right mouse button on the Belkin network finder applet and close it, i've manage to find some consistency again....

I honestly think the network finding utilities grabs the resource back totally when it wants to find a connection....

That still doesn't explain why this morning with me, I did all the above and had a really choppy connection still, then basically I reopened the applet, starter the ping, had a shower, shut the applet down again and it then ping'd perfectly with no dropped packets....(like immediately on closing the applet)

Maybe it likes clean users or something?!
