The one problem is the Intel GMA 950 graphics. I dont really dig that, but the computer isnt meant to power through games and such. Still the prices are pretty decent, and I like the black option.

The only thing missing from that MacBook (and the black one is really tempting) is a backlit keyboard. But that's a very minor detail.

the intel gfx won't do vista's eye candy, but that's the only drawback unless you use Aperture. I also don't think the PB or any other PPC based mac are going to wither away because of the intel chips. I plan to have my G5 for another 3 years before I start to think about replacing it.

It says it has a "glossy" screen, so I bet it's like that fucking dell 700m screen

Yeah, I was thinking about going all-laptop again (cracked and bought a G5 for Logic Audio), but by the time all of my plugins are UBs, the Macbook Pro will be a few iterations on

yeah, but the hit that an all aluminum body gives to the wireless reception is annoying sometimes. I agree, but the wireless thing is just as bad sometimes

Is it a bad thing that I would expect a $2K laptop to have at least 1gig RAM and a 7200 RPM HDD (MacBook Pro)?

Those things must be kinda slow with a 5400 RPM HDD.

I guess the speed of a laptop HD doesn't matter to me. I'd rather have a quiet, cool, low power consuming drive

Exactly. I think most folks using laptops dont expect them to be a power driving workhorse of a machine that will equal the fastest desktops out there. They get them for convenience. If it takes a split second longer to load a program I dont think it matters too much when you're chilling on an airplane. Additionally, the programs that are most used on the road are rather small (Word, internet, email, chat) so they dont require the fastest computer components to make any difference.

I have a 7200rpm drive in my powerbook and it makes a (very small) difference.

This has killed the buzz for me. You couldn't even push Q3 properly on that rig let alone anything current. That's a big shame.
