My 17-40 seems to have issues, but it might be because Canon is notorious for making soft wide angle lenses. I've also got a 5D, so I'm using more than the center of the lens which I know doesn't help things at all. Smart Sharpening with PS CS2 helps a lot though. For the price you can't beat it. I'll keep it until they come out with a fairly priced wide (16-20mm) prime since I only ever use it at 17 anyway. That 14mm brick they have costs like $1800.. fuck that.
Here's one I took yesterday... It's sharp, but I sharpened it twice in PS using very light smart sharpening settings.
Here's one from a few weeks ago. I exported it from Aperture, which loves to apply sharpening to the extreme. (luckily it didn't ruin the shot as it normally does)
I always knew what you meant, but if I'm going to spend an hour on an image making it look sharp without lines or 30 seconds in Lightroom or Aperture, I'll take my chances with the 30 second job
I have to agree with Plained, those shots are fucking awful. In all seriousness, I don't think you can ever go wrong with skeletal remains of the north american railroad boom. Story pictures always make me look twice.

Interesting
It looks like imageshack is dead, and I'm bored at work, so here's another shot few shots with that lens.
And one more of the skeletal remains of the american railroad boom

Everyone who knows things about things says that hood is worthless on a crop sensor (i think you have a 350), but I hear the hood that comes with the 24 1.4L works great if you can find one
