Strange hard drive issue.

Post by Bdw3 »

My second hard drive is a 4 year old Western Digital 100GB. (WD1000)

A few days ago it started cutting itself on and off several times during boot up. Once XP is loaded the drive seems to function perfectly.

What do you guys think? Does this sound like a symptom of a dying drive?

I’ve already got all my data from this drive backed up. I'm just wondering what this drive's deal is :(.

I would run a scan of the drive via the manufacture's utility. I can't recall this second what the WD utility is called, I want to say Disk Lifeguard. You can also use The Ultimate Boot CD and find the Western Digital utility on there, read all of what is on the screen to find out how to navigate as there are quite a few pages of hard drive utilities. If it fails the scans and checks then I would recommend a zero fill and afterwards running another scan and seeing what is up.

And the specific software name is : Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (Floppy)

Yeah, thanks. I ran the windows version of it, and it told me there were only 3 bad sectors that it could fix.

I didn't let it fix them right then and I haven't zero filled and scaned yet because a torrent that is currently in the process of downloading is using this drive. (my sister hit me up to download a show she missed :icon7: )
