Recording videos

Post by Foo »

So pop quiz for those in the know... What would be the single simplest, fastest method of getting a Q3 match watchable by all on the web?

So far the method that seems to fit is:
record demo
use ioquake to \video the demo
compress with MediaCoder
upload to youtube

Unfortunately ioquakes video command seems a bit fubar, produces garbled video headers for me.

Am I missing anything or can anything be made simpler? Mediacoder is a bit of a dog.. any simpler encoders?

I don't know mediacoder and I haven't tried ioquake yet.

Some use fraps for a real fast avi, but ofcourse quality is not that great - but for a streaming video it might do the trick.

Free version is limited to very short captures.

Virtualdub can do all those tasks, no need for multiple apps. Also, don't get why you wan't to convert them to JPG for a single clip. You need the space to create the screenshots in the first place.

You're missing my point. I'm not particularly interested in doing any fancy movie work, rather I want to establish the most straightforwards method of going from a game to google videos, or such.

I dont need camera positions, frame blending, perfect quality, editing capabilities etc. Also from a quick glance, no idea how this thing is supposed to handle videos from different mods.

Already had to submit a bug report cause ioquake's vid capture system appears to have stopped working in the latest builds. Just outputs garbage.

When it's working again it's definitely gonna make basic movie creation as slick as fuck. capture -> encode -> upload. Straightforwards system.

You might want to report that on the i.o bugzilla.

First off, it's an executable just like ioquake. Therefore, it works on _ANY_ mod.
Second, I never said you wanted all the extra crap(goodies) it features. It takes just as much time to use this method, then it does with the \video feature, simply because you can cram .tga -> .avi and compress it at the same time.
Step by step.

quake3mme.exe
\demo "demoname" (to convert it to .mme)
\mmedemo "demoname"
\capture sequence-name 30 jpg

Virtualdub:
Open one of the .tga's in virtualdub.
Chose compression if you want it.
Save as avi

Upload.
done.
That's 1 more step then the method ioquake supposedly works, and tbh the extra quality is worth it.

If you honestly think this is SOOO much work, then you gotta increase your tolerance towards work you just cant be arsed with.

Where does sound factor in there?

BTW I'm not lazy, get off the high horse. My interest is to determine the simplest method so more people will.

quake3mme drops off a .wav file along with the screenshots. (like I said in the other thread, hence the "nth time shit".
