Random Crrashes

Post by corpse »

I have a newish computer and I am getting random crashes where the computer reboots and then when it boots up it says, Windows has recovered from a serious error....etc..

Windows XP home, sp2, norton 2006.

I know its not much information, but does it sound like a windows thing or a hardware thing?

Either. Check temperatures.

Go to your Control Panel and click on System.

Then go Advanced -> Startup and Recovery Options and disable Automatic Restarts.

Then post the info that comes from the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Many things can cause this and thus you begin the long and arduous journey of finding the culprit.

Or you could shove it back to whoever you bought it from and demand a replacement...or a free repair.

download the iso, burn it on to a CD-r, Boot from it and leave it run for a night.

http://www.memtest.org/

it will test your memory like HELL and see if it comes up with Errors...

also what power supply does that computer have? and what is the spec's of the computer? ( i.e. CPU, Ram, Mobo, Videocard, PSU, Etc.. and i need details. )

AMD Sempron 2800+, 512 Ram, 450W power supply

When I first start memtest, it shows "check all unused Ram". Is this fine or should I change it to 512.............or type all Ram.

Onboard video and sound

i know it can run within windows, but that just isent the same.

windows will claim a hunk of ram thus you will be unable to test it.

I got fed up and formatted and am now re-installing.

However, there were a bunch of yellow exclamation marks in event viewer related to tcpip. I dont know if this could be related.

The computer is only about a month or 2 old so there insnt a bunch of junk on it yet.

windows XP SP2 has a TCP/IP "Fix" that will only allow so meny TCP connections to try and stop Torrents.

There are tons of patches to get 1000 Tcip connections as the max.. rather then the 100 or so that it will allow now
