I have a Radeon 9800 Pro with 128Ram and lately when I play Quake3 the screen goes dark after a few minutes of play. When I quit Quake and go back to my normal desktop everything is bright and fine.
Is this a Quake thing, or is my video card dying?

NOthing is running in the background and yes it does stay dark.
Havent tried changing any setting, but they are the same settings I used to use and this never happened.

Press tilde while in the game to bring up the console and enter the command there.

I tried changing to r_ignorehwgamma 0 but it still goes dark after a few minutes.
While in game, do I press the tilde key and then do
r_gamma 2.......................or whatever. I tried that and nothing happened.

Make sure you put in this exactly: r_ignorehwgamma 1
The fact you even said 2 makes me wonder if you input the command correctly.

Actually I put in r_ignorehwgamma 0 because Axbaby said his 9800 is set to that.
The '2' I mentioned was put in the r_gamma.....just playing around to see if things would brighten or darken while ingame.
I will change the r_ignorehwgamma from 0 to 1 and see if that helps.

No, changing it to r_ignorehwgamma 1 does not help. Still goes half-way dark after a couple of minutes.
I seem to recall a command something like overbrightbits or something......could this be it?

just delete q3config.cfg and let quake make a new one.
my screen the odd time will turn white when a windows task completes or an alert pops up like Amidy said earlier.
have you tried different video card drivers yet?

Yes, I deleted the old ones and then installed the latest cat 6.5
I remember that my screen used to go white [kind of washed out looking] once in a while.....maybe that was what the r_overbrgihtbits thing was for

corpse, check what your monitor can do before you use that "r_display refresh" command!

I have a new acer LCD. My resolution is set to 1360x768.
Within Quake my resolution is set to 1024x768
Strange thing here...maybe
seta r_ignorehwgamma "0" was in my q3config, but within the game and the tilde key I changed it to 1.
Anyway, I changed it manually in my q3config to 1 and now when I start the game, it is dark right from the start.
