Connecting Two Computers

Post by Java Traveler »

Can someone please tell me exactly how I may connect my two computers together, then play Quake III on them as a head-to-head match? I confess I´m totally ignorant but love Quake III. I´ve searched all the FAQs I could find, and only discovered it is possible to connect them...but not HOW to connect them.

If it matters, one computer (my laptop) runs XP and the other (desktop) runs 2000. The dudes at Activision say that should be no problem (but couldn´t tell me how to actually connect the computers).

without knowing your network setup (or lack of), it's difficult to say.

assuming you're posting from it now, how does your computer connect to the internet?

Networking itself is outside the scope of this forum, really. The answer for that is just a google search away.

Once you've got your network up and running, we can help with the quake part.

There's a few different ways. You could use a crossover cable and connect them directly with thier NICs. Or you can use a hub and connect both pcs to it( I suppose you could do the same with a router?). The xp and 2000 issue is beyond me as I've never used 2000.

The client PC's OS really doesn't matter. You can connect both PC's with:

- 1 crossover cable or
- a hub or
- a switch or
- a router.

Each PC must have its own unique IP address that lies within the same subnet mask. Something like PC1 is 192.168.1.100 and PC2 is 192.168.1.101.

Super simple. When you host a game, it'll show up in the "Local" games tab.

The prefered method will be to use a switch or router.

Considering that most of the regular T&T guys work in IT management, network administration, or tech support I'm pretty sure networking is within the forum's scope.

Thanks, all...I guess I didn't think to mention I'm currently using a wireless router (one computer is a laptop and the other a desktop). But, I don't use it to have the two computers talk to each other...I just use it to splice the cable modem so I have broadband on both computers. I appreciate the help. Let me press with your advice and see what walls I hit, then ask something more specific for you all to answer.

java, try this out:

On the computer that you want to run the server on ( Pref the faster of the two... )

click on start -> Run -> and type in "CMD" without the quotes.

Now you should be looking at a DOS window, type in "Ipconfig" again without the quotes and press enter.

There will be an ip adress listed. write it down and then Close the Dos window.

Start up quake 3, go to multi, and create a server with the map that you would like to play, Also make sure you have it selected to LAN :)

Now, go to the second computer, Start up quake 3.
When you are at the menu Press ~ and then "connect" followed by the IP that i told you to write down ( Again, without the quotes :) )

so it should look like
connect 192.168.1.108
press enter, and it should join..

frag away!

Btw foo, i dont think that there has been a question asked in TNT in a few years that fits in the "scope" that this Board was made for... :)
