Ok can someone shed some light here please. 50 cent related
I came across this by accident:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yERY-DslALI
I've heard of 50 cent - he's a rapper and there was a movie about him or something.
I figured since he was so popular it might actually be a catchy song.
wtf - not only is the music, the lyrics, and the voice terrible - but wtf - is this a common theme in today's mainstream hiphop?
He's basically going around talking about how he's gonna murder people that diss him.

yea, its pretty pathetic. Almost as pathetic as soccer fans (hooligans?), who I don't pay much attention to until I get to see them in their glory on the news fighting the police.
In the same vein as the question asked by jules, what the fuck is it about soccer and the fans that have them doing shit like killing players who fuck up and always rioting with the police, etc?
Lust for senseless violence at the heart of both cases?

I actually don't think it's that bad. The song is kind of cool, that's just his style I kinda like that laid back style.
There's some truth behind it, in 2000 he was shot 9 times and refused to cooperate with law enforcement about the shooting
"If I Can't" is a pretty cool song - my favorite 50 cent song (there's not too many I like) that's not very hard to find.

who thows personal politics into what they think about music? if it sounds good i'll listen to it.
that 50¢ song however, doesn't even qualify as music.
his "singing" in the chorus is terrible, and during the rest he sounds lyrically bored. The beat is also a pathetic 10sec loop. on a whole, if you close your eyes and listen to the song, it's about as musical as listening to a pillow fight.

I'm not saying anyone is wrong about not liking the song. If you don't like it - you don't like it.Dr_Watson wrote:who thows personal politics into what they think about music? if it sounds good i'll listen to it.

It was the whole "everything mainstream = shit" that I was referring to.
I see, because the people who listen to independent music have a hightened level of awareness and complexity.Ryoki wrote:What? It has nothing to do with politics. It's more that mainstream music is intented for a large audience, the music itself will be simple because the majority of people is simple.
Most music is not shit, the music you hear most is shit.
Don't give me that psuedo bullshit argument.
I'd say yes, but that's mostly because of the age factor. The people that actually purchase the most music and therefore decide what gets the most airplay are in their early teens.ctrlnuke wrote:I see, because the people who listen to independent music have a hightened level of awareness and complexity.
How many people that you know listen to 50ct? I'm thinking not too many. But if you were 15, i bet you'd know a few...
PS i don't really understand what you mean with 'independent' music. Independent from what, major record companies? There are several major record companies that have gotten big with music that does not appeal to the masses.
But there are still the same cliched messages found in music. The only difference is the medium of style. Of course teens are the ones who dictate the current style because as you said - they're using mommy and daddy's credit cards.Ryoki wrote:I'd say yes, but that's mostly because of the age factor. I wouldn't say independent music is better than mainstream - it's certainly more diverse but not all of it is good. I'd say the majority of it is shit. Just as the majority of mainstream music is shit. It's the whole radical outlook that different people have about calling all mainstream or all independent shit that I'm arguing against.
I guess when it comes to it, it's not very important. But music reflects the thoughts and feelings of the current society. You got suburban kids want to be like 50 - is that a good thing? - Of course not. But would it be better if every kid wanted to be like Frank Black? - Of course not.
Edit: I'm using independent very loosely. Most of the time I mean on independent labels, but in this case I'm referring to anything not cast into the mainstream light.
