Essential Q3 File List

Post by Foo »

K, trying to build a decent list of 'essential' Quake 3 files. That is, all the stuff you would need to go from an original Q3 CD to a fully fledged, patched, online ready quake install which is robust enough for just about any server.

MODS
OSP (Version 1.03)
CPMA (Version 1.32)
RA3 (Version 1.76)
Threewave CTF (Version 1.7)
Freeze Tag (Version 1.51b)
Ultra Freeze Tav (Version 1.6?)
Q3 Fortress (Version 2.30)
Urban Terror (Version 3.7)
Insta Unlagged (Version 1.2)
Excessive Plus (version 1.03)

MAPS
ztn3tourney1
hub3aeroq3
hub3tourney1
pro-q3tourney7
overkill
6++
japanc

MOAR?

Note: Red indicates new stuff added

Found urban terror 3.7

What extra items comes common to this? I've found a small cache of maps here:
ftp://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/games/urbanterror/maps
But I don't know if this represents the core of what's needed online, or if the stock maps are all that get played?

Could try PlanetQuake for threewave, and Doomer has the mappacks hosted in this thread. Ztn maps could be useful too. Can't think of anything else atm.

Edit: ThreeWave (don't know if that's the latest version).

Get ut_Sliema from there. It's a great super compact village map filled with more hiding places than you can count. I love being a ninja and wall jumping/ledge climbing the f out of that map. : ]

True. But I meant when you grab the flag and run it. You can hide in bedrooms, kitchens, stairweels or...behind trees if you want. I usually pack a grenade launcher a UMP, medkit, Desert Eagle and a pair of goggles and go on anti-camping crusades.

I'm not after stuff that's good, I'm after stuff that really gets used on servers.

Like for example Bal3DM1. It's good, but it never sees any 'airtime' on servers. So it's not going in.

Added some mods that had players on the net today. There are lots of mods I could be including, but if there's only 3 players online for the entire mod on a saturday then I don't think it warrants inclusion.

Depends where you live 'suppose, ya know? There's prolly a handfull or so servers in the us that seem to be running more than just the 'usuall batch' of maps, there are a few that have a good two dozen or so in the rotation, so you wouldn't be able to immediately join there anyway.

But I think overkill/6++ would be a safe bet.

Yes! Cheers. Overkill and 6+ for sure.

BTW, the folder is up to 1.2Gb now, and that's without pak0 (Since I can't distribute that...)

Oh so rare to see it played. I think that one would be very appropriate in the 'Best Of' collection I'll create in addition to this.

Anyone play defrag? What's the common version and what's the situation with maps? I would guess it's a mod where you frequently encounter a lot of custom maps?

Are ya gonna distribute this as a winrar self-extractor or summat? Mebbe add a few goodies in an extra folder like pre-made shortcuts, drwprs, pbsetup, q3minimizer, mapman, seismovision, ase? Proper links to q3w, pq3.net, pq, lvlworld, idsoftware, ggl, esreality, cached.net, cyberfight.org, own-age.com? Oh and icculus would be nice too.

Yeah, defrag should be in, there are plenty of nice servers, but many of them do run custom maps.

Oh there are a few of those 'smaller' mods, not cecessarily needing an install, but if you added them and have a shortcut it would help newer players know about them.

Insta-unlagged, excessive (regular and plus?), battlemod, noghost (seems like a ton of demo servers love running this, out of all places, and lots of people play it. Would be fun to use drwprs and check it out). As far as covering all bases (for popularity anyway) it'd be nice to have em.

The problem with pre-made shortcuts would be people putting their install in different places, but that (could) be fixable by player modifying the target line a bit.
