Thief: Deadly Shadows
Thief: Deadly Shadows
Lol, the engine is miles better than Q4s (Dynamic lighting that doesn't look like shit, bump mapping, all that faggy jazz), and to top it off the game's pretty sweet too.
The city section is pretty dull and frustrating and the same goes for sections where you're up against the undead and other junk like that, but it's broadly more of the usual thief goodness with a kickass engine that complements it perfectly.
Sneaking up on the cook by closing the oven door and snubbing the candles to make the room dark is pretty immersive stuffs.

I rather liked it, but then after a few hours of play i ran into a puzzle i couldn't solve and just sort of gave up. Had something to do with running from A to B before a certain door closed but i couldn't for the life of me figure out how to actually run...
Heh.

This seems the problem with a lot of good singleplayer games.Dr_Watson wrote:the problem with the thief games is that the developers have some sort of zombie fetish.
HL1 for example, they lapsed into that zen crap.
In Thief, you stop facing human opponents and go on to zombies and gargoyles.
In Far Cry, you end up fighting trigens instead of grunts.
I think the developers get bored or paranoid with running just one kind of enemy/environment, despite it being those enemies and environments which make the game so enjoyable, and go about creating a wholly different setup for a change of pace.
Maybe it's needed tho. It's often commented that zen in hl was crap compared to the rest of the game but I wonder how rich the game would have felt upon completion if it hadn't shifted pace in that way during the story.

More like you had your gamma jacked up and room looked bright, but you were actually in total darkness.StormShadow wrote:I found the AI to be absolutely dreadful in Theif 3: Deadly Shadows.. I could be literally 2 feet from a bad guy and he wont see me. Maybe im just too awesome.
Hardly the game's fault.

The AI was bugged on launch. Regardless of what difficulty you choose at the start, once you saved and loaded or walked through a mist door the AI reverted to Easy for the rest of the game.
The 1.1 patch fixes this, but if you played the xbox version you're fucked. But then again if you buy a FPS on a console rather for the PC you deserve to be fucked in the ass.

thief is a 3rd person game mostly
and did the xbox version revert to easy? really? i know it fucked up the sound often, forcing you to do a save/load routine :A. never noticed the difficulty though

Ahh, that explains it. I might reinstall the game and DL the patch in that case...blood.angel wrote:The AI was bugged on launch. Regardless of what difficulty you choose at the start, once you saved and loaded or walked through a mist door the AI reverted to Easy for the rest of the game.
Amazing how a blatant bug like that can get thru beta testing.

They didnt give two fucks about the game or the franchise. I would say I'm a thief fanboy, hell made a few maps myself (but never released due to how shit they were) but its so fucking obvious they were only in it for the xbox money.StormShadow wrote: Amazing how a blatant bug like that can get thru beta testing.
The .ini files for the PC are littered with xbox variables and settings, some of which make no fucking sense other than there for quick botch fixes.
It took a fucking petition and a year to get them to release editing software to make maps for T3. Think that would satisfy the fans and spark life into it? Hell fucking no, they gave us the editing tools alright, but didnt notice the obvious bug where EVERYTHING of the stock objects and textures are copied over into the new map when they didnt need to be. So maps are 50mb big when they should only be 5mb. Killed the fucking scene there and then. I think theres only twenty or so maps released to date.

You been keeping an eye on The Dark Mod b.a?
If there's any future for community Thief maps, I think it lies with that mod.
It's a modded D3 engine with artistic assets, the whole caboodle.

The AI briliantly recreates the inteligence of low end security personel.

Hitman Blood Money is great when you play it like a sneak (And not guns blazing).
