have you deleted any files from your q3 install? have a look in 'Q:\Quake3' (or wherever quake 3 lives on your machine) and see if there's a 'baseq3' folder.

default.cfg is inside an archive called pak0.pk3 which should be in that 'baseq3' folder. if it isn't then you need to reinstall the game.

a quick fix would be to just reinstall the game. when you've done that, get the latest patch from here:

http://quake3world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9294
(should be 1.32c?)

and take a look here:
http://www.quake3world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13903

edit: restart your machine, have you only just installed it?

didn't read your first post carefully enough - i don't use xfire, but it could be that it needs to know where quake 3 is installed - if quake3 tries to run from the wrong folder, you'll see that "Couldn't load default.cfg" error message.

try this:

restart your machine.

start up quake3, and try to browse for a game. if you get that "no response from the master server" message, look in the help thread i posted a link to (it covers things like connection/firewall problems).

check the settings for quake3 in xfire.
