New Headphones

Well I have been using Sony MDR-EX71s for a long time, bene through three pairs (due to NewEggs willingness to replace them, but now the warrenty is out). The main problem is the plastic covering around the wires seems to fall away, I believe Sony just slides the wires into the plastic without shrink wrapping or anything. I am looking for something similar, an in-ear headphone, great sonud quality, the earbud style. The other thing I don't like about the MDR-EX71s is that the cord is something like 4.75 feet long which gets rather annoying. I don't want to spend over $50 really, the main thing is good sound quality. I know Apple has some in-ear headphones and the problem with those is that they are white, first of which I don't much like white as it can get dirty and second I don't want to be advertising that I have an iPod. What would you recommend?

The apple phones aren't great.

If you want quality, consider the Shure E2c or above. Just dont get the faggy gamer versions.

Well they do look nice, in one of the reviews on newegg a guy said they were a replacement for his Sonys that the rubber had fallen off. The problems being $100 is very expensive and I'm not sure noise cancelling is a good thing as if I am listening to them around people then somebody might need to get my attention and they might hender that, also the codr length is 5 feet, the main problem though being the price.

Well a store on Amazon, Shoreline Music, sells them for $73 shipped, better price there. Still not too sure.

Ugh, Sony headphones...

I'd go for Bose. They never failed me until I got into a fight with a Paki and he broke them

Bose are a complete joke IMO. Overpriced units with underspecced components.

Which also reminds me that KOSS are a pretty good brand if you can find a suitable set in their narror product range.

Hmm, I bought mine for $24.99 CDN and IMHO had perfect sound quality, exceptional comfort, great flexibility, and a nice little volume thingy

KOS, theres one site to go to for iPod realted shit, and that would be http://www.ilounge.com. Reviews for more crap then you'd ever imagine. I've personally got a pair of Griffin Earthumps, black or white for $20. While they are a little more bassy than the source, they' sound great, have a nice build quality, and the bassyness can probably be fixed by covering up the weird porthole things on the sides, from personal experience (a small piece of scotch tape cuts the overbassyness almost in half) and they got a B- from iLounge.

Well the MDR-EX71s have formed a condition which makes it feel like steel wool on my neck so I think I will purchase some a new pair tomorrow. What exactly are the pros and cons of the Shure E2cs.

con: they're expensive, and intended for high detail not high volume.
pro: some of the best sound quality available.

What do you mean not high volume, I mean I can understand headphones not being all that loud, but do you mean that with the iPod on full volume it would be quiet or just that other headphones prolly go louder?

The test pair I tried a few months back didn't go as high as a full headset I tried in the same session. Both were pretty loud. But that could have been down to the kit that was powering them. They were both coming off different systems.

This is a good quote from the iLounge review:

Being very sensitive, and being stuck well into your ears, they need very little iPod amplifier power - about halfway across the iPod volume graph for normal listening

Hopefully that is the case, I would think being so sound isolating that it would need less volume anyway.

I got the Shure E2cs today, happy they got here before the weekend. These things are some awesome headphones. They really do bring out sounds and tones that went unnoticed before. They are by far the best sounding things ever, not only is the clarity and definition better then the EX71s but they have no distortion when louder. Also, they are not quiet at all. The clarity is very noticable on anything orchestral and the Ace of Spades, which was previously very confusing with the EX71s.
