ToxicBug is right for once, 400$ is not enough to gain any serious interest. (cause it's not enough for risk diversification etc)

So either start putting away money every month or spend it and don't look back.
if its the only money you would ever put into the account, yea he's right. how about this - since he's got the extra money laying around, why not start a habit of taking 'some' of whatever extra cash you have an putting it somewhere. Granted, when you are in zeeko's situation, you probably aren't going to have lots of extra cash to put away, but if he gets in the habit of saving now, its going to be that much easier when he's got the cash.

I think it's called compound interest... anyway even at 3% per year it would be (1.03^40)*400 = $1304.82, which isn't much really, cosidering 40 years have passed...
lol, Toxic fails at math again.

Seriously, you're in college, the only real decision here is what KIND of beer you're going to spend it on...

:olo: that's so true. Although, for most there is no decision to make as all they drink is piss-water (Natural Light).

I've decided to bank it as i should have 1500$ more by the time x-country starts... perhaps it will go towards a car/motorcycle/scooter.. When there is something that really seems appealing i will use it but i really don't feel a need for anything atm (except a small cheap scooter? :-) )

eye, where did he exactly fail...the compound interest i calculate for yearly (1304.82), quarterly(1,322.11), monthly(1326.06) and even daily (1327.98) all comes out about what he got in terms of return in dollars.

Where he gets mistaken is looking at this $400 as a one time stand alone investment rather than seed money to start a saving habit.

its entirely possible I'm overlooking something though in my calculations as I suck at finances.

Fuck beer, $400 would buy tons of bottom-shelf, rot-gut vodka.

I think you're right there...failing at math for even considering using the money for anything but beer.

693 cans of natural light could be purchased with $400 :)

Yeah, its the worst beer ever. Bud Light is an upgrade from Natural Light.

haha.. most popular American beer is horrible. A lot of my buddies drink Budweiser and that kinda crap. Yeck. I usually try and experiment with some of the micro-breweries. Every now and then you'll get a real good one.

No, I missed the '1' in his '1.03'.

edit: And I was thinking of the continuous compound interest equation. P = Ce^rt

I'll drink Bud Select as a last resort or if I'm doing heavy drinking at a party but otherwise I go for better stuff. I'm a big fan of lagers and ales. New Castle and Fat Tire are what I typically ask for.

yeah but can you really taste the difference or is it all about the lack of steroids?
yea the diff is incredible. I bought some organic beef and chicken for a bbq a few wknds ago, and nobody could believe how good it tasted - specially the chicken - so fuckin succulent.

the animals are not given steroids, hormones, or antibiotics. They're free range and the food they eat is organic.
