should canada bomb israel?...
i stated that the 15,000 lebanese canadians registered being in that country sounds right.
do you not find it intriguing that the OFFICIAL registered number doubled to 30,000 within a few days after the israel/hezbollah squirmish? why would you go there and NOT register with the embassy?
the official numbers that i have read state:
10-15,000 original registered canadians.
shit hits the fan.
30,000 registered canadians, with an official estimate of another 20-30,000 still unregistered.
how the fuck as a country are we supposed to be able to evac that many people from across the ocean?
as a taxpayer, i've learned that's my fucking money being spent. do i want it spent evacuating a lebanese canadian family who works in canada and is visiting lebanon for the summer? absolutely!
do i want it spent on 30,000 lebanese canadians who only hold a passport, have no home or work in canada. just an address of an uncle or cousin to have papers sent to, but have a home, business or work in lebanon with no intention of ever returning except in a situation that's unfolding now?
so who should be evacuated first puff in your opinion? a family of 5 on summer holidays or 5 men who stayed here for 5 years, got there dual citizenship and have not been back in the last 15 years?

the french, greeks and italians should'nt be able to do this either. this is one example of our past shitty policies. dual citizenship in this form is fucked.Canada has allowed dual citizenship since 1977, and many immigrants have used the opportunity to go back to their countries while keeping their Canadian passport as an insurance policy. Now they're using it.
"If we give it to the French, the Greeks and the Italians, why not the Lebanese?" said sociologist Brian Aboud, a Vanier College humanities professor and immigration researcher in Montreal, whose ancestors came to Canada from Lebanon at the turn of the 20th century. "If the Lebanese are citizens of Canada, they have the right to return.

see i love this. nothing makes me feel better about my country than when we let people come here and have a chance at a fresh start. i have no problems footing the bill for a few years while they get educated, find a job and DO SOMETHING that contributes to canada.HM-PuFFNSTuFF wrote:to be fair, refugees have a slightly higher welfare rate here in Canada compared to those who were born here but remember they are making a fresh start here, often with no resources.
saying immigration causes debt though is ludicrous

as a taxpayer I'm happy to help my fellow Canadians. If I'm going to get upset about my tax dollars being wasted, it'll be over other things like our huge defense budget, corporate welfare (tax breaks to profitable businesses), misplaced priorities regarding poverty and education, subsidies for people who drive cars etc.shadd_ wrote: as a taxpayer, i've learned that's my fucking money being spent.
helping people is always a good thing. are you really going to suffer that much due to the expense of evacuating those people?

For those who've been away for that long, uninterrupted, perhaps others arrangements should be made for them so as not to burden Canadian taxpayers with their journey back. For instance, they could be expected to pay back the cost of their trip over a certain period of time. If it's happening, however infrequently, it might be a wise move.HM-PuFFNSTuFF wrote:they should all be evacuated as quickly as possibleshadd_ wrote:

the point i'm trying to make is we have allowed ourselves to get in a big mess. by having such a massive amount of people stuck in one place.
it bugs me that someone who really is a canadian is not able to get out of there because that spot on the boat is being used up by someone who is not a citizen in a moral form but a convenience form.

Again if that's the case, those citizens of convenience (defined as those who haven't been back for however many number of years after earning citizenship) might have lower priority for evacuation (longer waits) and perhaps have to foot the bill as I suggested above.shadd_ wrote:the point i'm trying to make is we have allowed ourselves to get in a big mess. by having such a massive amount of people stuck in one place.

apparently australia has about 25,000 permanent residents of Lebanon.
The Federal Government will pay for the evacuation of Australian citizens and permanent residents out of Lebanon.
But Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer says those who do not usually live in Australia will have to pay their own way.
Downer says Australian citizens who are permanent residents of Lebanon will have to reimburse the Government.
"Because they're Australian citizens, we're happy to bring them back on these flights but we would expect those people to refund the taxpayer for the cost of the flight," he said.
seems fair, get them out if they want to get out, but if theyre going to continue to live in lebanon after this shit had died down, they should reimburse the gov/tax payer

Thanks, I understand your statement as we should do for the US may be. It's the first time I have a look at this thread because I don't like to read about wars. I have a phobie about it all ever since I can remember. the cold war at the time against USSR. T'was 1962 I guess when JFK announced from my parents radio sitting atop of the fridge that we were under alert against Cuba Or / and the USSR at the time. I was very young but this is a souvenir I will always remember.andyman wrote:canada should bomb itself. minus pete.

I am not Canadian, nor do I live in Canada for that matter, but just reading the page that the link took me to:
I do not understand how in the hell that any air strike could be considered accidental, if you drop a bomb somewhere you know damn well that you just dropped a bomb there. You do not just start flying over somewhere and: “Oh shit! I just dropped a bomb on some Canadians, sorry!”
I would say hell yeah, whoop there ass for that one.

On a side note, the news from Lebanon today is extremely fucking depressing. I fear the whole situation is going to escalate into dark, dark ugliness pretty soon.
You know, i'm actually really bitter about it, bitter and angry. Iraq just made me mad at stupid people, but this goes beyond stupidity - this is clearly the work of evil men. And not a western politician that does anything about it except take bullshit standpoints, it's disgusting.

What pisses me off is that we're unable to do anything about it. All we can do is discuss it and wait for Israel to napalm the entire nation, seeing as how they're able to escape retribution each and every time. The problem is that anti-war countries are afraid of speaking out against Israel in fear that they may send terrorists and the like to the protesters in order to "convince" them to see things from Israel's perspectiveRyoki wrote:On a side note, the news from Lebanon today is extremely fucking depressing.
