Quake3 keeps crashing my computer.

Post by c0ld »

When I go in to play quake3, pick the level/gametype/ect and start the game my computer monitor goes black(light on the monitor goes from green to yellow indicating.. what ever it is supposed to indicate..). . Weird thing is it seems to wait either about a minute or so in the game before it would do this or it shortly after I moved.
It used to just freeze rather then black out, then later ATI would give me some error telling me what the problem was but I've been away since then and the pop up hasn't returned so my smart ass forgot what it said. I've updated the ATI drivers since but it hasn't helped.
I'm not sure what spawned this problem. I've played the game often times before but never even so much as changed my cfg's or downloaded anything. As a matter of fact lately I just play offline for a few rounds. I haven't downloaded anything that I would think would have any effect on my system when playing games so I'm stumped.

maybe pushing the refresh on the monitor too far? try rebuilding your config and checking it against your gfx card settings to make sure there aren't any weird mismatches.

whats the command to adjust this?

although itseems weird since like I said above I didnt touch my cfg. And if I dont move it doesnt crash for awhile, even if a bot passes by/shoots/kills me.

I think the best thing to do might be to make a copy of your Q3 cfg file and deleting it from your base folder. Run the game and it'll place a default in there. Without making any changes, start a game game and see if it works. Then you can rebuild your configurations.

or maybe you've got some bad memory on the vidcard or something. if the config doesn't fix it, try popping in a different card.

Okay I deleted the baseq3 and the osp q3config.cfg's and jumped tried again. For awhile it looked as if it did the trick, I stood there in game for a few minutes to see if it would do anything, I even started to move around abit and play thinking it was all good. I woudl say about 5 minutes or so would pass then all of a sudden when I grapped the red armor(for the first time, not sure if that would have anything to do with it..) it froze up but came back, although I had to do a vid_Restart to get it to look normal. but shortly after that I got that ATI pop up that says:
VPU REcover has reset your raphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to the graphics driver commands.
and the blahblahblah "please tell ATI technologies about this problem...."

Looks like the GPU is overheating. Try to monitor its temperature. Above 60 degrees Celsius is worrisome, above 80 degrees is plain bad.

Motherboard Monitor might be able to do it, or depending on the card the manufacturer might ship a utility on the disc that came with it.

Well I turned my computer off overnight and started it up today and jumped in to q3 assuming everything should be cooled down and after 3 minutes it crashed although I didnt see the pop up report this time, it just froze up, then the monitor lost the signal(green light went yellow..). Although it crashed shortly after executed my cfg.
I cant see why it would be overheating now of all times though. I've had this PC and have been playing q3 on it for a number for 2 or 3 years now if not longer. And I havent touched my at all in a few years as well.

added: Just tried Colin McRae Rally 3, played threw on roughly 3~ minute stage and figured all was good, even watched the reply. But when I started a newstage it froze/crashed before I even crossed the starting line.

So... fuck. :dork:

Before you assume it's heat, try updating your video card drivers.

And try opening the case and having a fan blow into your computer.

I already tried that.

Also I dont have a spare video card.

I'll try opening her up and checking the fan(s).
