game-bloggers site now online

Post by o'dium »

A mate of mine has his own site up and running. Its early days but its one of those "game news for everything" style sites and TBH its pretty cool, has his own forums and all sorts.

Give it a whirl, just pimping it for him :p

If my memory of that font is right that's a PHP Nuke install.

Nice theme.

For those with constructive crits/comments, thanks.

I'm a total novice when it comes to web development (it shows!). The whole site is a theme, which i've build up with plugins (all GUI controlled). So it doesn't need an ounce of coding knowledge. Thanks god.

So yeah, it has rough edges, but has only been up around a week (maybe less). I know it's another 'generic gaming site', but i've been wanting to do something like this for ages. If there's something you want on there, then drop me a line)

I'm hoping to teach myself PHP and CSS, perhaps make it better.

All suggestions/comments are welcome (so long as it's not something along the lines of 'it's shit')

I was trying to find some sort of credit to what package you used but when I couldn't find one I just had to assumed you were in complete control of the design. I'm sorry "looks like ass" wasn't constructive enough but I really don't like the design. It's a bit too bland and all the content just seems to run together. One quick suggestion would be to alternate the background color of each news item. Or maybe you could even set a background for each seperate block of content that should be logically grouped together.

what he said.

unless you're very lucky or have a fresh idea that captures imaginations - you don't make popular websites while you 'learn php and css'. did you look at different content management/blogging tools before installing nuke? do you know enough about nuke/php/mysql to be able to port your content to something else when you need to?

congrats on the domain name, that's got potential. hope you've got someone besides odium providing content :)

I think my reviews would be fucking class mate, think about it, they would consist of me either flip flopping mid review on liking it or not liking it, or just shear slagging the shit out of it.

Quality if you ask me, i'm wasted talent!

Beyond how generic look.

Learn to fucking give news man. One half assed sentence about something and a link to the manufacture website is a bit shallow dont you think? and it seems alot of the "news" are like that. Dont just flop shit up while your bored at "work", either do it right or dont do it at all.
[size=75][i]I once had a glass of milk.

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I am now sick.

Aye. There's more information about who's posting on the forums than videogame content.

Foo, thanks for the PM, some good advice, thanks for going out of your way to help. I would have invested in a .com domain, but money is kind of tight for me at the moment. I may branch out to a .com in the future. We'll see if the site takes off.

As for posting news, yes, I have a lot to learn. Also there are others who post news on the site. I guess it is some form of feedback from you guys, which I do appreciate. But when the source of the news is either just a screenshot or just a tidbit of info then it's kind of hard to elaborate further. I was aiming at "short and to the point" newsposting method. I'll see how it pans out. Remember, i'm mainly one guy just experimenting, not a team (i.e. IGN, GameSpy, etc).

I don't expect people to like the site, the content, the colour scheme, the ads, the way in which news is posted. What would be nice is for people to just to give me constructive feedback.

And i'm not upset or pissed off at all, i'm not that easily offended. If I was then I wouldn't have registered here in the first place!

I'll look at the feedback from you guys and see if there are ways to make improvements.

Cheers
