When I move into my new apartment my PC will be going back in my room. I'm very strongly considering a 30" monitor, not only because I spend so much time on my PC but because it would double as a perfectly sized TV for my room. I would be looking to run cable, DVDs, and a Wii/PS2 on it.
How does the Dell stack up to the Mac?
Can LCD monitors be used to watch HD signals and are there any good HD cable tuners out there?
Or would I be better off leaving my monitor alone and getting a high-end TV for the living room?

I wouldn't have a couch in my bedroom...Eraser wrote:Doesn't seem practical to me to use your monitor both as TV and as computer monitor, or is your PC positioned at thigh height in front of your couch?
No, doing both is a waste of electric. I've got a 27" flat-tube for the living room so the only time the monitor will be a "TV" is when I feel like chilling in my room.werldhed wrote:You also might want to consider whether you ever work on your computer while watching TV...
In that case you might want a separate screen for each.
Yeah, price wise I'm not concerned because I'll have to get adapters to use the mac display anyways.Canis wrote:Between those two it comes down to aesthetics, unless there's some clear functional difference between them. The Dell's $100 more can be accounted for by the inclusion of the media reader.
uhm, both monitors require dual-DVI linksbitWISE wrote:Yeah, price wise I'm not concerned because I'll have to get adapters to use the mac display anyways.Canis wrote:Between those two it comes down to aesthetics, unless there's some clear functional difference between them. Ah, with DVI apple displays are compatible. I remember they used to have a special connector that wasn't directly PC compatible.saturn wrote:uhm, both monitors require dual-DVI linksbitWISE wrote:Yeah, price wise I'm not concerned because I'll have to get adapters to use the mac display anyways.Canis wrote:Between those two it comes down to aesthetics, unless there's some clear functional difference between them. I have the Dell 24" Wide ( 2405FPW ) And i am happy with it, i have played up to and including 1080I content on it and i am happy with it...
There is only one issue that i can say that it has though, there is Some Noise that is noted when playing video's, it dosent matter if you are playing Video's form your computer VS a Hooked up Device You will allways have Grainient Noise.
They said that its Fixed with the 2407FPW, but there is other issues noted with that model.
other then that, Give this a Going over, TONS of people, and i mean FUCKING TONS of people have 2402PW's, 2405FPW's, 2407FPW's and ofcorse the 3006/7FPW's as well...
they will give you an idea of what to expect...
P.s. You beter have a videocard to Drive this fucking thing, Native is 1920X1200 on the 24, wile its 2560 x 1600 for the 30" and Sli 7900GTX's is not enough to run 90% of the games at that res... Just fyi

Yeah but he could play everything windowed at 1280x1024 or in a widescreen res like 1440x900. Which is what id do if i had a 30 inch screen.AmIdYfReAk wrote:I have the Dell 24" Wide ( 2405FPW ) And i am happy with it, i have played up to and including 1080I content on it and i am happy with it...

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.
I am now sick.

Yea, that windowed thing may fly for some, But not for me... i cant play shit windowed... mind you if it was something like w0w you could easly get away with it.
Now for the Everythign would work 1280X1024, i beg to differ.. the ammount of aliasing and Blur from the TFT makes the picture quality "PAR" Amond TFT's. This monitor puts out Mint picture quality and to see games running like that is a fucking shame.
Other then that,
Ohh shit, another p.s.
Anything on this thing that is lesser then Component looks like SHIET! Reguardless if you are running it 1:1 scale, PNP, Dual display, Dosent matter... it makes my PS2 look like PS1.. Litterly.

I havent screwed with many LARGE lcds, but truthfully any game would look fine windowed. In fact they would look just as good as full screen at proper res, shits just going to be smaller.
In any case, its better than letting the monitor stretch it.
Or he could go nuts and get 2x 7950s

I keep hearing that FEAR will run with quad just fine in its highest supported res.AmIdYfReAk wrote:consdiering the issues that are around with SLI Setups ( beleve me, there are TONS ) why would you want to make it worse with Quad SLI?
Allthough, that is enough to run SOME games at Native... Fear, Q4 and etc, are not some of the games fyi.
And actually, truth be told i used to run quite a few games in 20XXX before i got my LCD, HL2, WoW, ect. and the jump from 1280x1024 to that wasent a HUGE Difference. yes i lost about 10fps, but it wasent enough to call it running bad.
And i run a humble 7800GTX. Single, No SLi.
Fear tho. Fucking fear man. For the life of me i cant figure out how to get that damn game to run smoothly in any res at any detail setting. And for a game that frankly dont look that good, thats fucking sad. So take FEAR off that list.
And yeah the SLI thing. I dunno, i knwo a few people who have had no real issues.
I do know that WoW wont even touch the second card, regardless of how you set it up or what tweeks you run.

just read about those on tweakers.net. seems like the 30" Dell is less quality than its 24" counterpart.
getting a few of those 24" at work if all goes well, so stuff like colorreproduction et al was very important. might not be as important for personal use though
