What does "User Interface is version 4, expected 3" mean?

This means your quake.exe isn't compatible with the currently installed Point Release. The only solution is to remove all pak*.pk3 files, except for pak0.pk3, and then reinstall the latest Point Release.

I think my game is messed up. I did install q3demo few days ago because I was craving for some Quake 3 and couldn't find my q3 cd until today. I think maybe somewhere, somehow the the full version is getting mixed up with the q3demo. I uninstalled the demo, deleted the folder and its registry files. What gives??

What he means is that the server you are trying to join is probably not running 1.32.

No I am not trying to connect to any server. I'm trying to load the game is what I'mt rying to do. I haven't even got that far yet to the main menu, to say the least about the servers.

Sorry if I sound rude I'm just really bummed out.

sounds like you've found the culprit. the easiest way to fix it (since you don't have any installed mods/demos/configs to look after) is to completely uninstall everything and start again. installl the game from the cd, then apply the latest patch.

I did that. I've uninstalled, reinstalled twice. I deleted the Quake III Arena folder, I went into registry and deleted whatever files for Quake III in there, too.

I'm so angry right now. There's got to be a way.

if you uninstalled then it should've deleted the files, folders and registry entries for you. it'll leave behind a config (because the file was created after the installation) but everything else should be pretty much gone.

when you say you've got 1.32, did you install the full 1.32 and then a little one to bring it up to 1.32c - or just the 1.32c patch? don't have the time or the files to hand to test it, maybe someone else could confirm if this error message could crop up in that situation.

another thing to try - uninstall/remove/delete whatever until q3 is totally gone from your system - then reinstall it from the cd and see if you can run the game before trying to install any patches. if you can run the game, then the problem is with patching. if you can't, then maybe there's a problem with the cd. google or searching this forum should be able to help you find a means of checking the cd. pretty sure someone wrote a utility to crc check all the files.

I installed only 1.32. I never installed 1.32c, what is that?? Maybe I need to download and install the 1.32c??

it's a security fix. but you don't need to worry about it until after you've got 1.32 working :)

had you already tried running the game straight after installing it?

Ah, ok.

I can't even load the game, and it gave me the same error message before I installed 1.32 patch.

OK read this and follow the logic:

The only components needed to make Quake 3 run are:
quake3.exe
baseq3\pak0.pk3
baseq3\pak1.pk3
baseq3\pak2.pk3
baseq3\pak3.pk3
baseq3\pak4.pk3
baseq3\pak5.pk3
baseq3\pak6.pk3
baseq3\pak7.pk3
baseq3\pak8.pk3

That's absolutely it. Everything else is either optional or complete fluff.

The error you're getting means that the quake3.exe and the pak files above are not the correct versions. This can happen if the patch installer can't update a file, or if the patch installer is corrupted and can't supply one of the files. Probably a few more causes too, whatever.

What you need to do is install the game from your CD to a completely fresh folder.

Then download the patch AGAIN from a NEW SOURCE, it's all over the net just search for the file. Then install the patch to a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, BLANK FOLDER.

When this is done, open the two folders side-by-side and drag the files you need from the patch folder into the game folder. Since I gave you a list of the essential files above, you know what you'll need to copy.

If it works once you've done this method, then you can copy over the additional extras with the patch, like the \pb\ folder.

By the way, you can even reverse the process and install the patch into a blank folder, then copy just pak0.pk3 across from the Q3 CD. It's the only file you need to make a complete copy of quake with a patch.

were there any error messages during installation?

does the folder definitely only contain files from the original installation - no patches, mods, custom models, skins etc,.?

right-click on baseq3\pak0.pk3 in your quake 3 folder and open it with winrar/winzip (pk3's are just zip files) - do that for every pk3 in the folder. if you get to one that winzip/winrar can't open then it's corrupt. you'll need to grab another copy of that pk3 from somewhere.

don't know what else to suggest - other than tracking down something to crc check the pk3s properly or acquiring another copy of the game. you'll still be able to use your own CD key, which is the important bit.
